Summary: At its scintillating best!!
Review: I have never seen a single episode of "Sex and the City". The simple reason being : It is not shown in India where I hail from. I happened to pick this book by chance while browsing through my favorite local bookstore and I am glad I did pick this one!What I like a lot about this book is that its not laced with any sweetness or sacchrine. It is as it is. True. Painful and yes bitter in most places. The characters are strong and yet so weak like all humans. The fact that it was nonfiction made me relate more clearly to the book and I was not biased while devouring it whole heartedly. Candace Bushnell draws from what she has witnessed or sometimes may be overheard. The setting could not have been more perfect: Manhattan in all its glory and languish is but a cold city without any warmth. Sex as most of the book is centred around funnily enough is not of great significance in the book according to me. There are way too many other paramters like loneliness, unrequited love, survival and friendship on which the book truly stands. A lot of negativity that this book generated was also one of the reasons why it became so famous and popular. But if someone would ask me what I found most amazing in this book: This book had the soul of a lost city. Of a city that could only cause grief! Nevertheless, a great read on a rainy afternoon!

Summary: What I like (and hate) about this car crash
Review: This book is horrible. It's horrible in the way car crashes are to people in the highway. Something terrible has happened to someone and you can't help but look. That's the best analogy I have for this book. The characters have no warmth to them whatsoever. I liked someone said in his review saying you'll find more warmth in porn. Save for Amalita who I thought was the only character in the book that had any spark of humanity (or is it vulnerbility) for what it's worth. That's the problem. The people seem so bent on trying to seem invulnerable that they end up becoming without emotion. Even the coveted plateau of marriage seems without love. But so does every relationship in the book. No emotion whatsoever. I've tried that way once so it should make me feel some sympathy for them, but I don't at all. Few of those women resemble people I've met. Noticed I've never said they were friends. They come off as people who are desperate, lonely, and bitter. I think bitter is the right word. The way a girl has been hurt so badly she makes the assumption all men are trash. Which is ridiculous to say the least. And the comments about New Jersey were predictable. What is it New Yorkers have against New Jersey, but seem to salivate over Connecticut. The only reason I give it two stars instead of one is for the occasional insights into people. The book may be depressing and malicious but you can't deny the occasional nuggets of truth. I especially enjoyed the bit with the threesome. Also for all it's devastation. I couldn't put the book down. If only to see how it ends. It's so bad it's almost good.

Summary: HORRIBLE AWFUL DEPRESSING
Review: Stick to the cable series, it's much better. I was really looking forward to reading the book (because the book is usually better than the movie/tv show, right? WRONG!). The book is SO poorly written (random dialogue with nothing to tie the random comments together), there's no story that I could discern, the characters are loathsome and shallow and devoid of any redeeming qualities. I had trouble picturing these "stories" as newspaper articles either. What was the point of this book?? If you're really curious, BORROW IT first.

Review: An entertaining read, to be sure, but quite cynical and thematically lacking in warmth. Cattiness can be fun, but if the character has no soul, who cares? Ugh. Not I. Read JANE GREEN instead. "Mr. Maybe" is a great book with which to start.

Review: Candice Bushnell captures the voice of New York singles - lonely, tired and somewhat desperate. A group of people so ambitious they jump from one scene to the next, always looking for a better fix. The book describes Carrie walking home, she sees a prettier woman in a white shirt ahead of her. Carrie imagines being a shark and viciously eating the woman. When Carrie gets back to her apartment, she smiles at her doorman and shows the doorman all of her teeth. Now THAT is New York City. Not the show on HBO.

Summary: Love the book!
Review: Sorry, but I have to absolutely disagree with most of the reviews here. I find this book very true and hilarious. Living myself near Manhattan, I think I started to understand better the NY crowd. There are so many true sayings, it is scary. You can like or dislike what is written, but it is so true. NYC is really very different from the other cities. Check out few of my favorites:
- "i don't know how anyone makes relationships work in this town. It's really hard. All the temptations. Going out. Drinks. Drugs. Other people. You want to have fun. And if you're a couple, what are you going to do? Sit in your little box of an apartment and stare at each other?" - "when was the last time you heard someone say "i love you" without tagging on the inevitable "as a friend"... There's still plenty of sex in Manhattan but the kind of sex that results in friendship and business deals, not romance. These days, everyone has friends and colleagues; no one really has lovers - even if they have slept together" -"if you are a successful single woman in this city, you have two choices: you can beat your head against the wall trying to find a relationship, or you can say "screw it" and just go out and have sex like a man"... LOVE this book!

Summary: 19th Century Sex (or Sex and the Shtetl)
Review: What was the point of female liberation and emancipation, when all women want is to define themselves through their (missing) halves? Is the modern girl, really not more than a walking incubator? Why did our mothers and grandmothers, burn their bras? Just to make way for Miracle bras with water inlays? Why did woman want to have the option to fend for herself, when really all she wants is to be dependant? Why are we brainwashed into thinking, that singles are social lepers? If all woman wants, is to sit in the boudoir and weave tapestry, we needn't have bothered with women's rights. Girls go out after work, get drunk, have one night stands, hope it's Mr. Right (or Big, for that matter), and to add insult to injury, feel like they have just auditioned for a part in Sex and the City.
If the Four Ladies would have lived at the turn of the Century in Poland, they would have been married by now and would have longed for a career. Arranged Marriage anyone??
