Summary: The most incredible
Review: I have read everything that Ken Follett has written...A Place Called Freedom was good, Dangerous Fortune was epic, Pillars of the Earth is a "Can't put it down until your eyes are crossed" wonder. You just can't stop until you are at the end, which by the way is the only ending of a book that literally made my eyes water....being a man makes that hard to admit...be that as it may, it is a tear jerker at the end....You have to read this book....

Summary: Anne Rice has nothing on Ken Follet
Review: Ken Follet has moved from his usual spy genre and in doing so has written the most moving novel that I have ever read! This story was so captivating that I literely could not put the book down (even on vacation in Colorado, much to my partners dismay).

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Phenomenal- Ken's best
Review: I started this 1000+ page book on a Friday night and couldn't stop reading it until I finished Saturday evening (okay, I got a little sleep). Follett is either a hit or miss. This one is a big hit.

Summary: So Good I Can't Start Again
Review: This book was so good that I can't bring myself to start another one. The last book I read was "A Man In Full". I truly enjoyed Wolfe's book, but Follett blew him away. Pillars of the Erath is the best book I have ever read.

Summary: One of my favourites
Review: Follett really knows his stuff with this one. I once saw him being interviewed and he stated that, although this book would not be his bestseller, he has had more people come to him saying that it is their all-time favourite book. And I now know why. What an epic. What characters, what a storyline ... he really is a master. I wish he would write like this again.

Summary: Excellent historical fiction
Review: The two most recent novels I've read are Timeline by Michael Crichton and Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Both focus on the middle ages. Timeline is weak and unconvincing, while Pillars makes you feel you're there. Follett has failings as a writer (his dialogue can be a bit wooden), but he can create characters that you not only know, but care about. Aliena is such a character. Follett has a real feel for the broad history of the middle ages and convincingly interweaves the fictional characters with true historical characters.

Pillars is the perfect vacation book, but there's a difference. Most vacation books can be thrown away without a thought after being read. Pillars demands to be put back on the shelf to be re-read in a few years. Read it.

Summary: Worth the Time
Review: Buy it now! This was the best book I have ever read! Follett uses his vivid imagination to paint the picture of life in the 1100's. Every word will have your full attention. Try to put it down!

Summary: The kind of book that makes people love to read.
Review: OK, I could pretend to be some pretentious history professor and try to knock down everyone who loves this novel, but WHY? This is the kind of novel people will fall in love with. Regarding the numerous annoying questions of historical accuracy: Um....it says FICTION right on the spine, people! (Hey, I hated The Stand because I think it gave an inaccurate view of what Amageddon will look like!)

I'm not going to beloabor points made well by other readers. Suffice to say that if you enjoy wonderful characters, hypnotic plotlines, and surprising twists, you'll find much to love here.

It's easily the best fiction I've ever read, and I urge anyone who hasn't tried it out yet to do so. (As soon as you're done reading your current book, that is.)

Summary: Some other authors for fans of this book
Review: Well, I still think this is the best book I ever read. After three years, I still think about the characters and long for a sequel or comparable title from Follett. I would like to offer some suggestions of authors I have found who have helped me satisfy my need for more historical fiction.

Sharon Penman's novels relate in the same Maud/Stephan period, but relates them with Wales and it's struggles. I have loved all of her books, and look forward to others.

Jack Whyte's Camulod series covers an earlier period (500-600 AD) and is a long tale about the Romans in British History, and how they affected the tribes and clans in early England. He weaves this historical fiction around Arthurian legend, actually around Merlyn and Arthur's grandparents, parents, etc. Wonderful descriptions of life as Mr. Whyte sees it, and fantastic descriptions of how Excalibur was made. It's fiction, but it will make you wonder if it could have really happened!

Others to consider: Edward Rutherford, Diana Gabaldon, Jennifer (?) Roberson, and Dorothy Dunnett.

Just some ideas from someone who fell deeply for Follett's masterpiece!

Summary: Very Good.
Review: Lots of detail, very good character development. I read it in a weekend while I was sick ;-). The only thing I did not particularly like was the character dialog .. it just seemed like they way the characters talked was more 1990's rather then 1100's. It was easier to read for sure, but it bugged me throughout the whole novel. Still a great read, and I recommend anyone who starts this book to set aside a lot of time until they finish it.
