Rating: Summary: Barnburner... Review: David Baldacci has given his readers another barnburner with his latest book, Split Second. Secret Service agent Sean King is on the campaign trail with a presidential candidate, when this candidate is assassinated right under Sean's nose. Although King isn't the team leader, he takes the blame and ultimately leaves the service and tries to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. Fast forward eight years. Rising star Secret Service agent Michelle Maxwell has the presidential candidate she's guarding kidnapped under mysterious circumstances. Maxwell seeks out King to compare notes, and as they dig, they discover that not only are there many similarities between the two cases, but that they're actually connected. As with most Baldacci books, this one is filled with murder and mayhem, bugs and bombs, and a few kidnappings. You also suspect that one of the bad guys is working on the inside, but I couldn't figure it out until the person revealed him/herself. The ride has enough twists and turns to make you carsick, and the plot will keep you guessing until the end. One thing I have noticed about Baldacci as he becomes more prolific, and that is more of the good guys are still alive at the end of the book. This might make for happier endings and more satisfied readers, but it doesn't make a book more realistic. Still, this one will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful and great plot! Surprise ending! Review: A quick and suspenseful read with quite a complex plot. Worth a good bedtime read!
Rating: Summary: Poorly written disappointment Review: I am a big fan of Baldacci's other books. Not this one. Split Second combines horrible dialogue, a ridiculously improbable story line, and an absurdly laughable ending. I would not recommend it to anyone. I finished it only because my wife said I had to read the ending because I would not believe it made it into a book. If you have to read a Baldacci right now, re-read Absolute Power.
Rating: Summary: More a mystery Review: Having read all of his books I find this one to be more of a mystery. His plotting and growth of characters excell as always and there is some "Thriller" to it but I feel he is long on the mystery side in this novel. Saying all that I would highly recommend this book, all of his books are a pleasure and this one rates right up with the best.
Rating: Summary: I liked it Review: I briefly scanned the 90 reviews and what I found was either 1) readers loved this book or 2) they hated it because they couldn't remember the characters involved. I'll try not to be to harsh to the latter group, but I was able to follow along and thought that Baldacci did a great job keeping me from accurately guessing who the bad guys were. Enjoy the book!!
Rating: Summary: Another Baldacci Blockbuster Review: Michelle Maxwell made the mistake of her career. The presidential candidate she was guarding barked an order at her she knew she shouldn't follow. Now he's been abducted and she's left with all of the responsibility weighing on her as well as a ruined Secret Service career. Sean King can certainly relate. In his Secret Service career, he dropped the ball guarding a presidential candidate and that man was gunned down in a hotel. Those split second decisions cost people their lives and destroyed careers. Michelle is quite familiar with Sean's history. She knows she's in a similar situation and seeks out his help. In their investigation together, they discover more questions and just when they think they have things figured out, they get new wrinkles to their theories. With more interviews and clues, they even start to unravel the mystery behind the even that tore apart Sean's career eight years earlier. Sean King and Michelle Maxwell go on such an interesting journey and you're right there with them every step of the way. These are a couple of characters you'd like to catch up with in a sequel.
Rating: Summary: Almost excellent Review: All the book is excellent, it will keep you reading all the time and you will always want to know what will happen in the next page, but it has two big mistakes, the first one is that you know exactly what happened with the kidnap when the FBI make his investigations and deductions, you know what deductions are good and what aren't, the second mistake is the end of the book, Baldacci must thought another reason for the kidnapping.
Rating: Summary: It has its moments Review: This book definitely has some strong moments in it. The idea is that a secret service agent fails and a presidential candidate is killed. Years later, the mastermind behind the killing is back and wants to kill the agent, who is now retired and trying to get on with his life. Another agent loses her candidate altogether, and now we have the beginnings of the story. There are some tangled moments here, but overall this is a good story. The only thing I didn't really care for was the ending. It seemed a little too comic-bookish. Why does the character stand in one spot rather than do the smart thing and move around to protect himself and his charge? Still, I enjoyed the book and would read the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Great read Review: Okay, let's see: Interesting and intricate plot, great dialogue, twists and turns, wonderful characters, and, oh, yeah, great writing. That equals . . . . a great read! Loved, loved, loved this book! This is by far Baldacci's best effort to date. Would also recommend Brown's ANGELS & DEMONS and McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD.
Rating: Summary: a rollickingly fast read Review: in a nutshell: two secret service agents mess up, allowing their charges to be assassinated and kidnapped. the two agents eventually get together and figure out the 8-year-old conspiracy at the heart of the matter. my first Baldacci read, and not too bad! the prose hit fast & hard, never limping like, say nicholas sparks; but baldacci and vince flynn share the same classical weakness of setting up a good plot, fanning the flames at the beginning and then letting them die by the end. i finished this book 2 days ago and i don't actually remember the wrap up, if that tells you anything -- and i'm not yet old enough for alzeimers. this book provides a darn good escape from normal life (unless you're a secret service agent, presumably).
