Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Book Review: I think all books by Beatrix Potter are wonderful. I remember reading them when I was young and I still read them today. They bring back childhood memories. My favorite tale is the tale of the two bad mice. Beatix Potter books are classic bedtime stories.
Rating: Summary: I learned to read with these books, they are excellent. Review: I was taught to read with all 23 books, I read them growing up and plan on reading them to my children. I enjoyed them tremendously. In fact I lost the books and was upset because they were such a fond memory. I reccommend anyone of all ages to read these wonderful books.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful bedtime reading Review: My young daughter (15 months) and I have just completed our second reading of this extensive collection. My daughter loves Jemima Puddleduck and Mrs. Tittlemouse. She can flip all the pages until she finds one of these characters and then proudly points them out to me. As a parent, I love the stories because of the crazy and adventurous plots. In the Tale of Mr. Tod, Benjamin Bunny's children are locked in an oven while Mr. Tod (a fox) and Tommy Brock (a badger) duel in a territorial battle of wills that involves suspending a full pail of water over a supposedly sleeping Tommy Brock. The first time we read it, the suspense was killing me! Another favorite is the Pie and the Paddy Pan. A very proper cat named Ribby invites Duchess, a dog, for lunch. Duchess correctly assumes that Ribby will serve mouse pie. She concocts a hilariously funny scheme to substitute the mouse pie for a pie more suitable for a dog. Obviously, the lunch is disastrous, and pretty darn funny. I decided to buy all Beatrix Potter's works in one complete source book after reading Jim Trelease's READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK. He stresses the importance of reading aloud to children and one of his highest recommended authors is Beatrix Potter because of the complex sentence formation and vocabulary introduction. While my initial reasoning may sound rather boring, we continued reading these stories every night because they are truly delightful tales with lovely delicate drawings.
Rating: Summary: Lovely pictures disguise worrisome & troubling tales Review: The lovely illustrations in these stories disguise the sad, troubling, and worrisome content, which I do not think is appropriate for young children. Corporal punishment, threats to safety, and parental disapproval are all too common and real themes in the lives of some children. Dressing it up with beautiful illustrations and artful storytelling doesn't take the sting and concern about of the stories themselves. I find the stories disturbing, and so did my child at age three. I have put these stories away -- there are so many better books that give children positive messages, not fearful ones.
Rating: Summary: A Timeless Classic Review: These stories are a timeless classic meant as much for adults as children. Far from being dark stories (Grimm's Fairy Tales are far more darker and contain more unpleasant themes than Beatrix Potter's stories), they reinforce many important life lessons and will still be around long after Pokemon becomes a footnote of the past.
Rating: Summary: Very well done Review: This CD is an unabridged reading of the books of Beatrix Potter. They are read by Shelly Frasier and she does a great job. She has a real talent for voices and brings Miss Potters memorable characters to life. My son loves listening to this again and again. Because the reading is so well done, I don't mind having to listen to it again and again:
Rating: Summary: always a kid Review: This is a wonderful book to have in your collection. The illustrations are lovely.
