Summary: Sappy pre-teen romance
Review: I started reading this expecting an exciting tale of the Smoke Jumpers, fire fighting tactics, and adventure. What I got was a sappy pre-teen romance soap opera that resembles a Harlequin romance. The female lead is in love with both male leads, creating a Melrose Place plotline that got so ridiculous that I put the book down, never to take it up again. Stay clear of this one!

Summary: A Pleasurable Read
Review: I really enjoyed this book. People complain about predictability. Some events in this novel took me completely by surprise and some didn't. I would expect this of any book. However, I did think that this was a very good book, very well done, with great character development. I would (and have) highly recommend reading this in your spare time, and if you're skeptical, just buy it used - the words on the pages are the same no matter how many people have seen them before you have.

Summary: Fantastic !
Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read. I do not understand why it has not gotten better ratings from readers. It is a 5 star in my book. Will never forget this story.

Summary: Big Disappointment
Review: One of the most predictable books ever written. This love triangle is nothing new in today's fiction. Every page was predictable. I wouldn't waste your time with this one. I was very, very disappointed.

Summary: Foul language
Review: I had to give this book one star because that is the lowest rating you can give other wise it would have been zero. I was recommended this book by Amazon.com, recomendations based on my previous purchases mainly books by Nicholas Sparks. I rented this book from the library, read about five pages and was so turned off by the foul language- that is in every sentence or every other word. This book is going back to the library the same day it was borrowed. It was voted one of Amazon.com best of 2001. Well, we all know what horrible things came that year, based on this book recomendation the "Best of the Best list" was no different.

Summary: An enthralling tale of friendship, love and danger
Review: The smoke jumper tells the story of the bond between two friends through work and love.
His name in Conor Ford and he falls like an angel through the sky like an angel of mercy, braving fire and flames to save the woman he loves but knows he cannot have.
For she is the partner of his best friend and fellow smoke jumper Ed Tully. Julia loves them both - until tragedy strikes on Iron Mountain and the horror forces her to chose between them.
In the wake of this tragedy, Conor embarks on a harrowing journey to the worlds worst wars and disasters, this gains him great fame but none of the happiness that he was searching for.

i feel that this book is a rich, imaginative and heroic tale, told unashamedly straight from the heart. It captures the grit and splendour of the contempory American West with compelling realism. Nicolas evans is not only an amazing story teller - he has a rare ability to tell his tale with great vividness and simplicity.

I would really reccomend this book to anyone thats looking for a great read and for a book that you won't want to put down.

Summary: Absolutely amazing!
Review: Though it was predictable at times this book was amazing. I read all 560 pages in only a few days! I got so into it that even when I wasn't reading it I thinking about it and wanting to go home so that I could keep going! Evans' descriptions and writing style pull you in so deep you feel as though you're living the characters lives and when you finish it you feel almost bereft. This book made me laugh and cry and was one of the better books I have ever read. Nicholas Evans is making quite a wonderful reputation for himself!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good, adventurous reading
Review: The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans is the story of three people and the love and life they share. Ed and Conner are best friends and both aree smoke jumpers who parachute into fires to head them off. Then Julia enters the picture and three are set off on adventure and disaster, love and betrayal. The book tells their stories as it focuses on them separately and together and the many intersecting lines that bring them together. The Smoke Jumper is heart breaking, heart wrenching, touching, and intense.

Summary: Classic story: fate vs. free will--well told
Review: Personally, I think both the reviewers who hate this book and those who love it (I am somewhere in the middle) all missed the point.

Smoke Jumper is an updated Thomas Hardy book, where love, the choices we consciously make, and the wholly unpredictable events of the larger world all interact to create what, in times past, was simply called "fate".

Sky is the symbol of all of this. She clearly had no choice in most of her life--abusive step-father, grinding poverty, Native American ancestry. Yet she makes a conscious choice to leave. Then fate, in the form of a traffic stop, intervenes. Then, as she finally makes a new choice--to embrace her heritage--fate again conspires to crush her, first in the form of an older boy who makes unwanted advances, and then in the form of all consuming fire.

So, was Sky's life path a result of her conscious choices or of forces completely beyond her control? That is the theme Evans explores in the entire rest of the book.

The detour through war torn Uganda was, admittedly, a little out of the way. In earlier times--think, Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native, similar "far away" imagery could be obtained by having a character wander the moors, go to London, etc. However, our world is smaller. How could all communication between Collin and Julia have been broken in a believable way if he had simply gone, for example, to New York?

Summary: If you want to care about the story characters
Review: A love story, with character development reminiscent of Nevil Shute; Ed and Conner are best friends who, as a pair, create a total person. With the addition of Julia, their three lives branch together through danger, tragedy and happiness
