Rating: Summary: GIVE ME A BREAK!! We've read this way too many times before. Review: I cannot believe that a majority of the costomer reviewers enjoyed this no good piece of junk. Suffice it to say, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES is nothing but 320 pages of a 95-paged story that has been written over and over again, about someone waiting to be saved by Prince Charming from the burning fire.As far as I am concerned with Lily Owens, throrughout the book following her mother's death, she cries again and again about it, giving me one heck of headache. She needs a reality check almost as badly as Michael Jackson. In fact, she also needs to realize that Death is a brazen serial murderer that doesn't care as to whom it takes off of this planet. She should've just forgotten her mother's demise and continued her miserable life. And as far as I'm concerned with Sue Monk Kidd, she's a writer with mediocre word choice. It is so mediocre than even a 7th-Grader could write 10 times better than her. Basically, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES is not worth the paper printed on. Sue Monk Kidd is, as well, doesn't have what it takes to compete with the "Big Boys" and is a disgrace to the writing business.
Rating: Summary: Well written book that stays with you... Review: I immediately fell in with these characters. The life of Lily 'beat me down', but also made me remember that there are certain things you just have to do as a teen. Each of the characters tug at your heart as the story plays out. The story is uplifting and disheartening at the same time, and leaves you wondering about Lily and the sisters for days afterwards. I still wonder at the sensuality of this book, and it somehow reminds me of 'Song of Solomon' by Toni Morrison.
Rating: Summary: Awesome book Review: I picked this book up last year on the recommendation of one of the ladies working in a bookstore...just got around to reading now. For me, when a book is really, really good, I can picture everything very clearly. It's like I've just been to see the movie, instead of reading the book. This was one of those books. It was well written and I can't think of one thing I didn't like about it. It was so well written that I felt like I was there, with Lilly. I was in the pink house, I could feel how hot it was in South Carolina, I could picture everyone of the "Daughters" in my head. The book was so good that it makes me wish I could go there....to the pink house....and live a day or two with August, June, May, Rosaleen and Lilly!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: Very enjoyable book and a fairly quick read. Love the descriptions of the bee keeping. The character development is good, and I find myself thinking of those beekeeping sisters even now - 2 months after I finished reading the book. Thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: So Much Better Than TV Review: Since every TV series I fall in love with gets cancelled after two episodes, I have recently become an avid reader. I have found my taste is far more in touch with mainstream readers than whoever the Neison Families are that govern TV. Of the mainstream books that have been recommended I have enjoyed four out of five (loved "My Fractured Life", liked "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and "Bleachers", and couldn't finish "Life of Pi"). "Secret Life of Bees" is one of the books that I not only enjoyed but really fell in love with. This is the kind of book that makes me happy to not be watching so much television anymore. I feel like I gain something by reading books like these.
Rating: Summary: Great Book for anyone Review: Great, HeartWarming, Charming, Ispirational, Down-to-Earth,Intelligent, Historical recognition of civil rights
Rating: Summary: Honey Honey Review: have pondered over what I should write about "The Secret Life Of Bees" - I have found so much meaning in it. I feel the main secret - (well, the first being that the book is AMAZING!!!) is going to be different for all readers. I was just thinking today, how August - a beekeeper in Triburon, South Carolina provides so much for Lily - a young teenager who comes to live with her and help her make honey...and who is in search for answers to her deceased mothers' life: Why did she and her father- "T-Ray"- fight? Why didn't Rosaleen, her black, sort-of step-mother, tell Lily about her mom when she knew...? And why was Lily running to this town in South Carolina? Lily could not - as much as she learns about the beekeeping business from August - and her two sisters, May and June, and as much racism as she is exposed to and all of Lily's experiences in South Carolina learn what she learns from working with the beekeeping sisters. August is like the month - the comfort that summer is still in the air....it does not turn into a "fall". August, the month where summer lies in between summer and fall - a balance of alternate weathered days that brings harmony, as the August in the book. In her beekeeping she teaches Lily about what bees do when certain bees are not performing their designated role, and how they learn and adapt to reinforce survival. We may not "have it all" but we can - and should - learn how to move on...even when we don't have it all. Even when a part of us is somehow missing. The Secret Life of Bees weaves a beautiful, heart-tugging novel that I do consider a classic. Because I have learned that even if we do not have the sweetness in life and should it become bitter, we must always remember the sweetness still exists. And the sweetness is "...honey... a preservative. It seals over the comb in the hives to keep it safe and pure so the bees can survive in the winter...I guess you could say we are preserving...at least inside our hearts we're doing that."
Rating: Summary: The secret's out Review: Honey, this could bee the worst book ever. I'm not pollen your leg. Don't bee-lieve the buzz. Hive your children. Don't wax me why everybeedy stings this is such a good book. Wasp up with that?
Rating: Summary: A Delicious Honey of a Story Review: I am an aspiring writer and I only hope I can turn out a novel half as gorgeous as this one. The story is lovingly crafted, intelligently and clearly told, and just so eloquent. The characters are vivid, colorful and very life-like. The writing is exquisite, so full of imagery and poetry. "When darkness pulled the moon into the sky..." Wow... what a juicy, creative way to say the moon came up. Sue Monk Kidd has made a fan of me and I will wait anxiously for her next book. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Inspirational Characters Review: I thought this book was wonderful. It was a fairly simple story, with inspiring characters. They had such a unique circle of freinds, and I truly felt that the characters are what made this story special. I highly recomend this book, it was easy to get into, and hard to put down.
