Rating: Summary: A new gender for Patterson's voice Review: Readers will find that James Patterson's character voice found throughout the Alex Cross series is once again prominent in 1st to Die, the first in a series featuring The Women's Murder Club. Lindsay Boxer is San Francisco's Cross, a woman homicide detective in a man's world, similar to Cross's black detective in a white world. The first of this series finds Lindsay and her long time friend Claire, new friend Cindy, and work colleague Jill working to solve a string of murders involving newleyweds. Lindsay's character development was excellent and most promising, with Cindy and Claire not far behind. Jill, who I hope to see further developed in future novels, seemed thrown in at the last minute and was not a major player. However, as this is the start of a series, I see major things ahead for these 4 women and the city of San Francisco. I was leery of reading a non Alex Cross detective novel by Patterson, but this one has me anxiously waiting for the next!
Rating: Summary: Contrived Review: This is the first time I read James Patterson and I am not impressed. The characters are one dimensional and the plot is too easy to guess. If you think this book is a police-investigation procedural, you will be in for a nasty surprise. Although there are police procedural aspect in this book, it is sloppy and it does not drive the story. Patterson relies on contrived, melodramatic of conflicts/interactions between the dying heroine, her prince charming, her loyal friends, and the red beard evil advisary to drive the story. Standard recipe for a typical soap-opera episode... In short, there is nothing exciting about this book. Patterson likes to use adjectives in front of his nouns to get us to "feel" for his characters; he even italicizes them often as if begging us or commanding us to emphatize with them and to get excited about the story...
Rating: Summary: Wolf Review: First book with the girls. Best book I have read in a long, long time, also the best from the author. I was hooked from the first chapter. I didn't even try and put it down. The story never dragged if it was a rollercoaster the first lift would have to reach the moon. Want a great book to read this is it.
Rating: Summary: Well Written Mystery Review: This was a very good book. Typical Patterson...short chapters, interesting charactors, weaving plot, and just an easy book to read. This is the kind of book that I thought about while at work where I couldn't wait to get home and read more. Look forward to more in this series.
Rating: Summary: Another gripping Paterson thriller Review: First to Die by James Patterson is another great murder thriller, following in the tradition of the Alex Cross series. I could not put this book down and finished it in one day! Lindsey Boxer, the main character of this thriller, is an Inspector with the San Francisco homicide department and, who finds herself with three bride and groom murders on her hands. Leaving no visible clues at the murder scenes, Lindsey, her partner Chris Raleigh and the rest of the force, find themselves stumped over these senseless murders. Enlisting the aid of three other women friends, they form the Woman's Murder Club, combine their resources and talents in the hopes of catching this maniacal killer. Patterson, once again, has the reader hanging on to every chapter, tying to solve the mystery, only to be completely riveted at the every end - classic Patterson!! With females as the central characters, Patterson deviates from his strong male, Alex Cross type characters. The characters were not as developed as in his Alex Cross series, but nonetheless, I found these characters to be just as strong and able to hold their own. As a Patterson fan, I found this book to be one of this best in that the ending was not only a mind-blower, but also a double whammy! Without giving away the ending, one has to read the book to find out! This reader is eagerly anticipating the next Patterson novel!
Rating: Summary: Page Turner Review: I have read many of James Patterson's books. After being disappointed with "Cradle and All", I got "re-hooked" as a James Paterson fan with "1st to Die". 1st to Die is great for anyone wanting a quick read that grabs your attention and keeps it there. I read it while on vacation while trying to unwind from a complicated life - so it fit the bill perfectly. Hope his heroine and the "murder club" will be featured in future books
Rating: Summary: A page turner Review: I just finished this book in two days and I really enjoyed it. James Patterson is the master of twisting the ending of his books and knowing this I kept trying to figure out who did it the entire time. I think I actually figured it out a few pages before everyone else. You are pulled in to the story from the beginning when two newlyweds are murdered in cold blood hours after the ceremony. You wonder who would do a thing like this. But, it gets worse, of course with 3 newlywed couples murdered and everyone is left to try to piece the puzzle together. The main character is a woman which I think makes this book very interesting having been written by a man. It was definately a change from the Alex Cross era, but I think it was a good one. I liked the characters and I can't wait to see what happens from here. All-in-all, I definately would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading James Patteson novels, but also to anyone who likes a good mystery, with a hint of romance, and can deal with the gore of multiple murders.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I loved this book! It took me only a day to read! Intense, intriguing and a definite page turner! I couldn't put it down. This was my first read by James Patterson and I was really impressed. I look forward to reading his new book! I can't say enough great things about this book. It kept me on my toes until the very end!
Rating: Summary: An entertaining read but not the best written. Review: James Patterson seems to have a good grasp on plot and writes a novel which reads easily and quickly. If, however, you prefer something a little more memorable, pass this one up...you aren't missing much. While the novel is entertaining and the plot is fair the characters themselves are shallow and not very likable. I found it impossible to relate...each character is a masterpiece in stereotyping. Furthermore, Mr. Patterson is quite inept at writing in the first person as a female. If Mr. Patterson spent just a little more time on character development to support his good ideas and fairish plots his books would probably capture a greater following of fans. As it stand I am not likely to pursue any of his work any time soon.
