Summary: Someone who read the book
Review: First off, reading the "reviews" by readers who did not read the book, I don't believe you have the right to give comments to potential readers on this book. Second, those who critisize his book, do you have a PH.D?

His book, as he stated and during the 9/12/03 TV speical, is not going to explain in detail what to or not to eat, how little or much you need to excersice to loose weight, nor the information you might receive from other failed fad diets.

What he does is tap into the psychologic reasons to help better inform readers. I believe this book goes hand in hand with his other 4 books; he's not going to sugar coat and give people what they want to hear, instead he's telling you what you need to hear.

This review is written by someone who is in the process of obtaining a PH.D as well in tip top physical condition and I highly recommend reading this book.

Summary: It's your decision
Review: This makes sense. You can only lose weight if you decide to do it, and make a plan for it, and carry it out. Positive messages and a plan and use your will to do it. Your motivations may differ but there's only one way to do it. I've had every sort of diet pill and fad diet since I was 11 years old. But one can do anything one sets his/her mind to do. This book is about getting to that mind set. A good idea, and it is helping me.

Summary: Information we may know, but now we can apply it!
Review: Many reviewers here have complained the book rehashes some of the same facts about obesity...well DUH! He has mentioned in interviews regarding obesity control there is "nothing new under the sun." Dr. Phil did not invent a new food to burn fat, or a magic pill...and those who are disappointed I feel are feeling that way as they wanted a miracle, a magic potion, a word, anthing to get them motivated, and what Dr. Phil says is own who you are, you cannot change what you don't acknowledge. We know how to eat, but now we can learn why we have, and hopefully stop. He pulls no punches, we are for the most part responsible for our own obesity, he has even suggested we purposely planned our lives around food..and he is right. He opened my eyes with his honestly, and as I read the book, I would grimace at the times I had made up excuses for my obesity, or why I cannot lose weight. This is is no punches pulled reading, brutally honest, but with hope. Hope that things can change because there is no magic, there is nothing "new under the sun," so we can read this book, and go out and change our body sizes, because there is only one way to lose weight....move more, eat less!! Bravo Dr. Phil.....After reading this book, I am not only committed to change, I am at peace; this is truly the last "diet book" I shall read, and that gives me much more time to walk!!!

Summary: Not impressed
Review: I was hoping to hear some new and exciting health advice. I actually didn't really read it, I found myself simply skipping paragraphs......I mean, using smaller plates? This advice has been around for many years. I can find some of Dr. Phils weight loss tactics in any monthly issue of Fitness or Shape Magazine. For new and up to date proven and useful health info just log on to Weight Watchers web site for monthly eating tips and true, new and innovative health / weight loss information. Save your money . Sorry Dr. Phil :(

Summary: Everything Old is new Again
Review: I'm glad I'm not paying for the hours it took to read through this book! We always had stress in our lives, but the country is fatter than ever! My parents built bomb shelters, landed in Normandy and my classmates and I sat under our desks during nuclear bomb drills! Something else is going on in our country that has to do with what the industry has done to food; it's always been the center of family society and gatherings. If you don't know by now to get the potato chips and cupcakes out of the house if you're trying to get a hold of your eating habits, let me remind you and save you a few dollars! Calling a friend for support is a good idea, no matter what problem you have! Trust me; you already know this stuff!!

Summary: On Target
Review: Aren't you sick of people who don't read the book, but want to review it based on their criticism of Dr. Phil's looks or T.V. program?

This book is a great resource for people who really do want to lose excess weight and keep it off. Yes, you can find many of his ideas in other places, but perhaps this book will finally make them click for you. If you attend Weight Watchers meetings you will hear most of the same principles. You might try combining the accountability and support of weekly meetings with Dr. Phil's advice. Do whatever you need to do for your health and well being! Good luck to all!

Summary: A real plan
Review: I really got what I wanted with this book- real help to getting my weight under control. I need direction and an action plan not just another restrictive food list combined with a uninspiring exercise regime. I am convinced that Dr. Phil's book is the answer to life-long weight management.

Summary: Worth the read, but overkill!
Review: Dr. Phil does a great job at relating to the average person and he does not try to talk over anyone's head. This book reflects those same characteristics. He's right, you have to take responsibility for your own actions. But, duh, isn't that the case for every action we take in our lives? I like Dr. Phil and his way of reasoning, but this book seems to me like it's just another way to capitalize on a population that is growing increasing overweight or obese and everyone is desparate for an answer.

One thing I did like about this book is that it talks about exersize and not just "what kinds of foods you can eat". Exercise is what everybody needs; exercise with strength training is what everybody needs even more. We can't sit around and stuff our bodies with sugar and other high calorie foods unless we're willing to "burn those calories baby".

This simple fact about weight loss is this: Burn more calories that you eat and you'll lose weight. The problem is, most people want a quick fix. Let's face it, we didn't gain an extra 100 pounds in a couple of months and we're not going to take it off that fast either. If you want to lose weight, buy this book. It will help you analyze if you really do want to lose it or just complain about it. Then go out and buy a book entitled "CURVES" written by Gary Heavin. This book will really educate you and give you easy to follow, commonsense solutions to permanent weight loss without permanent dieting.

Summary: This is a great book!
Review: I would very much like to respond to Karla Antonio's review as well as the reader from WI...first of all I think that it is very unhealthy for a person to say such mean spirited things about another person. Dr Phil is NOT FAT. He works out every day, eats well and he is not any fatter than most large men. He is 6'4" and weighs 240. That is not fat by any measure of the imagination. He even says that he is not the regular poster model for weight loss, would you rather a skinny man who has no idea what he is talking about or a guy who has to workout and eat right to stay healthy and understands that struggles you have to get fit or stay fit.

As for the reader in WI, I am disappointed only because I believe that either the book was not read or that large parts of it were ignored. Dr. Phil understands perfectly that there is not a "one size fits all diet" which is why his book is not a diet book but a behavioral approach to changing the way you eat. He is not there to suggest that you need to eat a particular type of food at all times, instead you are given a wide variety and told to size down your portions. His food plan is not only sound it is endorsed by the American Heart Association (Dr. Eckel, Professor of Medecine and on the Council of Nutrition). Dr. Phil also worked closely with a highly experienced nutritionist, as well as several other doctors- as you can read about in his acknowledgements.

Dr. Phil also takes into grave consideration people with medical problems that make it difficult for them to lose weight. There is an entire chapter dedicated to such people and charts to show you how to figure out the results for yourself (Chapter 11- When You Can't Lose Weight).

I have been of Dr. Phil's for years and have had the honor to see him in person and I can tell you that there is not a more genuine man in TV today. He Genuinely cares about the people that he advises. Buy this book because it is not like all the "diet" books and because he is not the usual svelte woman on the cover. He is "real" person- who wants to help you!

Summary: Dont buy it!!!
Review: I purchased this book with anticipation that it would be good.

It is one of the worst diet books on the market and I have read a million. It reads like a "wanna be" diet book or in other words it seems to be trying to hard to convince you that the material is on target when in fact it is way off base.

The credibility of the author is in question after reading this book.
