Summary: AKA - Dr. Phil's "Quit Crying About Your Weight Solution"
Review: Dr. Phil's new weight loss book is a great way for him to use his pulpit to focus people on the epidemic of obesity. Most of what he advocates is sound, but he needs to understand that a great deal of "emotional eating" is driven by potent physiological signals and simpy advising his readers to "stop eating so much" is ridiculous. There are numerous (proven) approaches to controlling these physiological hunger signals - including stress management, cortisol control, blood sugar control, and psychological counseling (that Dr. Phil advocates), but also selecting the right foods, exercise program, and dietary supplements. I teach courses and do research on these very topics at the University of Utah and Dr. Phil could bring a new element of success to his readers by drawing on the wealth of information linking psychology with physiology and biochemistry. Losing weight is a lot harder than just "deciding" to be thin.

Summary: What a Waste
Review: This book is a waste of time and money. Dr. Phil? much ado about nothing. Sleep will do you more good than watching or listening to him.

Summary: Methinks he doth protest too much!!
Review: Dr. Phil looks straight into the camera and swears that he is not on the national "diet bandwagon." However, despite his protests to the contrary, Dr. Phil is absolutely on that bandwagon with a diet book and associated eating guide, not to mention Dr. Phil's Weight Management Supplements and Dr. Phil's Shape Up! Complete Nutrition Bars sold at Walgreens. He is capitalizing heavily (no pun intended) on America's need to wake up to the fact that we are killing ourselves with refined, processed food and lack of exercise. That said - the advice in his book is sound, but not new. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to eat sensibly and exercise for the rest of your life (or for however long you wish to maintain a healthy weight).

Summary: I Loved It
Review: I loved this book. I am a sucker for books that are nothing but hype and marketing. Way to go Dr. Phil. I am looking forward to his next book on how to cure premature baldness. Dr Phil. should know something about that.

Summary: A tough attitude doesn't equal change
Review: As a dietician and part time fitness instructor, I am an admitted weight loss book junkie, constantly trying to find good references for my clients. I've read them all and when it comes to new ideas, Dr. Phil doesn't offer anything new in this book, and he agreed on the Larry King show last week.
His focus is about providing the statistics on obesity while repeating most of what you hear every day on his show: ie: Take responsibility, have a plan, do what works, etc. Although correct, after years of working with overweight individuals, people need more than facts and tough love to get them through this personal and national obsession. ... Although sound, I feel that Dr. Phil's book fails to address the internal, spiritual battle we have with our weight, the one that makes us choose between self-love and self-defeat. Low's book does.
The nation's weight issue will end when we make peace with our bodies and ourselves. Period. Dr. Phil will tell you what you need to know about the facts, but don't we already know the facts?

Summary: Finally!!
Review: I, like many others, have tried every program, pill, etc. I read Dr. Phils book and my questions have been answered. The way he wrote this book, the words grad your attention and you can't help but feel energized. I need to lose 50 pounds and have already lost 12. I have no doubts that I will be able to do this. Everything he wrote is easy to relate to. You just need to have an open mind and believe in yourself and the words. You may have heard some of the things before, but there's something about this book that makes the words come alive and really mean something! I can't express enough how this has changed my outlook and life. AMAZING!!

Summary: Dr. Phil adjusted the weight charts just for him (and men)
Review: I was excited to learn while reading Phil's book that the weight charts were going to be adjusted. As a woman with much more muscle than average from working out a lot when I was younger, I always felt that the charts didn't take that into consideration. He promised his weight charts were going to do that.

Then I turn the page, and find out that he ONLY ADJUSTED THE CHARTS FOR MEN! I dug out my weight chart guide book from the 1970s, and the women's portion was exactly the same, but the men's portion was given 20 more pounds. With the same height, a man can weigh 30 more pounds than me at 5 foot 6 inches. Sure a man's arms are going to be larger, but that's it. I've got the [chest] and the hips, not to mention my runner's thighs. If anything, a woman should be able to weigh more if you compare part for part.

According to his BMI calculation (hips divided by weight measurement) I have .80, just right for a woman, according to him. However, according to his weight charts, I will have to lose 50 pounds! I am a size 12, 5 foot 6 inches tall, and I don't think I need to lose 50 pounds. About 25 pounds should be just perfect and bikini ready. Not to mention, that BMI doesn't take a woman's shape into consideration. It's easier, for example for pear shaped women to make the grade on BMI than women who's weight is in their upper body.

Phil has written a book to justify his big body. He has succeeded in making me feel fatter than ever before. Thanks Phil! I'm glad you feel better. At 6 ft 4, 240 pounds, you didn't have to go to this trouble to justify your weight. Perhaps you should just follow your own advice and lose weight.

Summary: A Dose of Reality
Review: As usual, Dr. Phil gets down to basics with his approach to weight loss. The man is an unabashed behavioral psychologist, and he makes no apologies for it. Let's face it, folks: most of us know a lot about healthy diet and exercise. If "head knowledge" could take the weight off, most of us would live in the land of svelte. Phil's new book approaches the problem on the ground floor--get real about why you got fat in the first place, or you will never solve this problem permanently.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are parts of this book that are reminiscent of Laurel Mellin's superb book The Solution. However, I disagree that McGraw practices plaigarism. Indeed, as I read, I found myself thinking that the two books would be wonderfully complementary for those of us who need to dig a little deeper and develop stronger tools for self-mastery.

If you are looking for dietary and exercise advice written in microscopic detail, there are hundreds of other books out there that will do all the thinking for you. Personally, I don't believe most of us really need that much micromanaging. He tells you which foods are best for you and tells you to get your butt off the sofa and get some exercise (recommending walking at first, even including a chart to help a chronically inactive person ease into activity.)

The book is an easy read and a great resource of those of us who need a no-b.s. approach to getting real about our weight.
