Rating: Summary: If you look for the unspected Review: Many years have passed since a book surprised me so much as this one... It appears to be ordinary heroic fantasy, but soon it develops a lot of interesting characters, each one with their own personality, and allways coherent. But the best thing in the book is that, although the characters and plots are absolutely logical given the personalities involved, each chapter (and there are many) gives an absolutely new twist to the plot. That is something very difficult to acomplish without giving up with logic an coherency... But this book is from the author of "Fevre dream", and it should be spected. Only that G. R. R. Martin is allways a good surprise.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: This is an outstanding story, well written, with excellent character flow. I look forward to reuniting with the characters and the story plot when the next edition comes out. George is a natural for fantasy readers.
Rating: Summary: Dutch comments for this extraordinary book Review: Yes, indeed, this book has reached the shores of The Netherlands (in the English language that is). Please allow some Dutch comments for my fellow countrymen & -women. Don't worry, it's all good.
Rating: Summary: let the game begin! Review: This is lavish fantasy epic that I found unforgettable it set in a world where seasons last decades. When Lord Stark becomes the King Robert's "hand" he enters a sinister web of intrigue, deception and murder. He and his family must battle their enemies the Lannisters, who happen to be married to the king. This novel has large cast of great characters, deadly intrigue, action, romance betrayal and terror.Once you enter this world where the deadliest contest is played: the game of thrones you will never forget it!as one villianess has said"When you play the game of thrones you either win or you die"
Rating: Summary: A must-read! Review: I couldn't put this book down, it was so powerful and gripping. It's one of the best books I've read in years -- I, like everyone else, am waiting VERY impatiently for the 2nd book in the series! aGofT has a few weak points -- from the author of "Sandkings", I had expected some parts to be a bit spookier -- but those weak points are better than the best writing of the majority of Fantasy writers out there. Read this book, but be prepared to be reading continuously for a few days, losing sleep and work time!
Rating: Summary: A tale of epic proportions Review: A Game Of Thrones is powerful, moving work. All the wonderful and interesting elements are here: the honourable hero, his father's son, the traitorous queen, the reluctant king, the dwarf, gallant knights, lords and ladies...all involved in a tale of love, betrayal, sacrifice, words and oh yes...there're dragons too! What more could one ask for? The characters are so believable, so REAL, that we feel we actually know them by the end of the book. Imagine how depressed I was to learn that a major character has been killed off...in George Martin's novel, people live and people die...just like in real life, which with its wonderful characterisation, only makes the experience all the more painful and rewarding. There are 807 pages in all(paperback edition), but the never predictable plot will keep you turning pages. I am eagerly awaiting the second volume in this 4-volume series destined to be a classic - A CLASH OF KINGS
Rating: Summary: Hail to the King ! Review: From now on, the world is divided into those, who`ve read the Game of Thrones, and the poor souls who haven`t. I have read fantasy all my life and this masterpiece is on one level with "Knights of Dark Renown" and (until now!) with good old Lord of the Rings. Please, please, Sir Martin, I humbly beg you: Keep up the high standard and don`t disappoint your followers!
Rating: Summary: One of the best authors ever!!! Review: George R. R. Martin did a magnifacent job in this book. 'A Game of Thrones' can easily be rated up with such classic works such as Dickens and is at the top of all Fantasy authors. Even though he portrays the book in seven different view points it is still captivating and you love all of the characters. aGoT has knights, kings, queens, ladies, lords, bastards, wizards, you name it and it has it. There are a lot of books that have these types of characters, but this one is truly original. If you don't like graphic material, such as sex and violence, and are wary about reading this book, you should read it anyway just for the sure beauty of his style of writing and the plot. He is constantly pulling something new that you would not have expected and always keeping you on the end of your seat. A must read for anyone interested in the noble lords and ladies of medieval times, or the fantasy lover or the fiction lover. This novel can easily be enjoyed by all readers.
Rating: Summary: Powerful mastery of characters!!! Review: Being an avid reader of all fantasy books on the market for the last eight years, I found this book to be quite a page-turner for many reasons : First and foremost, the seperation of the chapters describing the characters' view and life within the storyline; secondly, the oh-so many plots and twists the book has within its pages; third, the great depiction of the panoramic and surrounding of each of the characters; ...need I go on? I await the sequel with bated breath and in the meantime, I watch this WebSite about every day for good titles and new ones too!
Rating: Summary: Very good but depressing heroic who-killed-who intrigue. Review: 'Sokay I guess (sniff) (heheh). No really, although I would not go into the sort of raptures that other reviewers have indulged in I certainly found plenty of "meat" and little "fat" in this book. Like many people I am wondering if George R R Martin can keep up the standard in subsequent books, and I hope that he does. I gave up reading heroic fantasy years ago but I bought the paperback version of GOT purely because I liked Martin's SF writing. I have not been disappointed.
