Rating: Summary: One of the most mature fantasy novels I've read Review: Outstanding book. It reached my top 25 of all time. (Including books like Ender's game, The Hobbit, Fareneheit 451, etc......)
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary use of language as a storytelling tool! Review: Whereas numerous science fiction/fantasy writers rely on tricks of adventuresome plot or high-falootin' gadgets or exotic sounding names with lots of x's, k's and q's, George Martin has used the English language to full effect in creating the fantasy world of the Starks and Lannisters. It would not surprise me if this man were a philologist in the manner of J.R.R. Tolkein. His use of language creates cleverness, brutality, anger, frustration and beauty just through the perfect choice or combination of words. Martin's language skills are what set this novel apart from others in its genre.
Rating: Summary: Rational Fantasy of the First Order... Review: A perfectly sculpted portrait of life in a world more finely detailed than any save Tad Williams'. Excellent, realistic political and military manoevering, gritty, dynamic characters and an excellent multi-element plot only help to ensure this novel's place as one of the greatest fantasy works of all time.
Rating: Summary: Fantasy, Politics and Intrigue Review: This book is not only one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read, but also one of the books I've ever read -- period. George Martin creates a richly detailed world where characters act out political and military dramas against an elaborate historical tradition. Martin weaves an intricate plot through several major characters, yet manages to give each character a unique and independent voice.I highly recommend this novel to anyone with an interest in fantasy, medeival history, or political drama. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT Review: The odd thing about a lot of fantasy novels is that the ideas of what makes a good story do not consists of any really new ideas. The problem is trying to make them work. Game of Thrones creates a fantasy world that is full of mystery, action, intrigue, and suspense that is just plain fun to read. So many stories always have magical elements that sometimes seem to get too godlike or omnipotent at the cost of coherence. (maybe that's why it's magic eh?) Finally! It is refreshing to see a story that has magic as a strong part of the story but in a much more subtle way. No wizards blasting away at each other, but the characters all know and fear magic as something completely unknown. In short magic is actually mysterious and well, magical. Combine this with a chessgame of a story and I see an excellent series. Can't wait to read more.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!! ^0^ Review: My initial reaction to the book wasn't good - here in front of me was a novel that was thick enough to replace my doorstopper, by an almost unheard-of author, and the blurb sounding dull and uniteresting. But i picked it up and read it anyway, and what do u know???? It was FANTASTIC!!! Before, I've only read novels by authors like Eddings, Jordan, Goodkind, Feist but Martin gave me a new prespective abt what the fantasy genre is all about. Don't get me wrong, Jordan, Gookind and all aren't bad at all, but I'm just really puzzeled at why I've never heard of Martin till now!!! For people out there that who's looking for great fantasy books that is on the same, and even beyond the level of those authors, u'll have to try this book - u won't regret it!!
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: I love this book so much! I RECOMMEND IT GREATLY
Rating: Summary: Excellant Review: This book is most definately on my top 25 list of books. Not just fantasy/sci-fi either. And I've read thousands of books. It was fairly slow-paced, but it had a great influence. I loved it. Absolutely fantastic. And I didn't even mean to read it! I am a member of a book club and I saw this book by an unknown author and say "The hell with it! I don't want a book by some unkown new author with probably no skill" and to my dismay I forgot to mail in the form stating that I did not, in fact, want them to send it to me. So a month later it comes in the mail and I'm down 20 bucks. But I figured what the hell, now that I own it, I might as well read it. I tell ya, it took me but 1 day to read this 800-page book. I was hooked! A must buy! If you're at all interested, however, I recommend Spider Robinson (the book series deemed CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON) very much. As well Terry Pratchet (the book series deemed DISCWORLD). Pick up a copy of one of the books in those series' while you're at it. (hehe)
Rating: Summary: breathtaking Review: I will keep it short, I have read a lot of books, but this was the only boo that stopped from doing anything than reading it, during classes, during dinner etc. I almost forgot to breath. And it says a lot, because i am bored very quick... I loved the way it slowly became clear what the links between the different stories and persons are. And finally a book with strong female figures... I can't express how frustrated and dissappointed I was when I raced to the bookstore to find out I had to wait over a year for the release of the second book.. George, hurry!
Rating: Summary: great great great great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I HAVE READ WELL OVER 1000 FANTASY NOVELS, THIS ONE IS ON MY TOP TWO LIST
