Rating: Summary: Best Fantasy Novel I've read in Years Review: This is just a super book. While you'll need a score card to sort the characters at first. The plot and pace are just excellent. I can't wait for the sequel.
Rating: Summary: A good book, but not without it's problems Review: I thought this book was great. Let me just say that now. The characters were well-developed, and the plot had a dark quality to it that I enjoyed. I had a few problems with it, though, and since the problems were fewer than the good points, I'll save everyone some time and focus on those. I thought the author spent too much time developing the plot to the south, leaving the mysterious Others to the north a bit TOO mysterious. I didn't like the fact that the book cover emphasized magic, monsters, and dragons, while their actual role in the book was rather minimal. I enjoyed the book immensly, but I'm not sure I would have bought it if it weren't for the misleading cover. That bothers me. All in all, I think the author tried to have too much going on at once. There were too many plots and subplots for one book, and the political intrigue got a little slow at times. More detail about the Others would have been nice. As it stands, the book is almost more of a Clancy novel set in the middle ages than a fantasy. Still, it's a great book, and I recommend reading it.
Rating: Summary: Wow... Review: When I first started to read A Game Of Thrones, all I could think was, "wow.. what a long book! And I dont quite understand whats going on..." But as I read on, I could find myself being drawn into the story, I could see myself there, and I wished the book would never end. I love the way that the story unfolded itself. I cant wait to read A Clash Of Kings. I absolutely loved A Game Of Thrones, and I would recommend it to anyone. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars, for it truly deserves more.
Rating: Summary: 'Not a Fantasy Novel' Review: Though 'Thrones' is classified under fantasy, it doesn't actually fit, save for a few passages. Outside of the Others and the Dragons, the majority of the book involves different nobles plotting for power, seizing power, and fighting for power. The book could easily have been set in early Europe. That notwithstanding, I was disappointed in 'Thrones'. It's a fine novel, but not the exceptional read I was expecting based on reviews. Explicit sex..and too much of it.
Rating: Summary: A break from the "Insert-name-here" Fantasy Novel Generator Review: ...that modern sci-fi authors apparently use. Unlike the predictable plots of Eddings and Jordan, Martin keeps you guessing, twisting in your seat with anticipation. His characters are rich and believable. The "good guys" are not the all-powerful gods of magic and warfare, but are normal people, just like you and me, yet the magical element so crucial to fantasy lurks in every page. The author makes the reader both despise and empathize with the villains. This book, and its sequel, are the most captivating novels to ever grace my bookshelf. He is to be commended.
Rating: Summary: A very well written real life story, definetly a must read. Review: I would have to say that George R R Martain did and excellent job writing this story. His combination of varying characters and real life actions plus situations always kept you on edge. In all this series is one of the best I have ever written. Right up there with J R R Tolken...maybe it has to do with the R R's in their names.
Rating: Summary: Great Book. Not the stereotypical fantasy... Review: ...where young innocents must band together to save the world against overwhelming odds with the help of a wise old person: Lord of the Rings (Frodo, etc and Gandalf), the Shannara novels (Shea/Wil and Allanon), David Eddings (whoever and old Belgarath), Terry Goodkind (Richard and Zedd), and countless others. This is a book with great characters of all ages , from young innocents to great kings with many children. There are many unexpected happenings in here, including a surprise death or two. I would recommend the book to any adult or mature teen who can handle the complexity. I would also recommend reviewing all the characters listed by house at the end of the book. An exciting book with some great sword play that is not overwhelmed by sorcery. The book generally jumped from character to character by chapter. I found myself disappointed that I wouldn't find out what would happen next to one character, and flip ahead and think "ok, only 76 more pages until I find out what happened to Tyrion", then I would do the same thing with the next chapter and so on.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: Well, what can I say that has not already been said? Plenty of people have praised this book with only a few acceptions, that should tell you something. My intial feelings after reading this a few years agos was that it was one of the best stories I have read. In fact I purchased the book again in order to re-read it before diving into the second one. My one fear is that it may turn into, and seemed at times to turn into, a Terry Goodkind series. Which means a wonderful first book in "Wizards first rule" to a long blown out plot that kept me mostly bored. Don't let that happen Martin! Anyway, if you have not read this I highly recomend it. For me it was up there with "Enders Game", "The Black company", "On Basilik station" as well as all the Jordan and Donaldson series. In short a must first read.
Rating: Summary: What was that?! Review: And I have thought I've read everything. From the Lord of the rings to The wheel of time, and that no-ont, but no-one can enlighten me. Well... Mr. Martin succeeded beyond my wildest imagination. Well done!! RJ wrote on the cover that this work is unbelievable, maybe he can learn a trick or two.
