Rating: Summary: The Mitford Series Review: I absolutely loved this series, and have shared it with my closest friends and family. Mitford certainly has its share of eccentric folks, and I found myself identifying with many of the them, and truly enjoying them. A pleasant, easy read, I looked forward to each book. I found the writing wonderfully humorous and at times quite touching and would recommend this series of books to anyone looking for characters with the human touch! Jan Karon has described my kind of town in Mitford.
Rating: Summary: going to bed with your best friend Review: I am generally not a big fiction reader, but I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed reading a book as much as I did when I read The Midford Series. Jan Karon has a way of writing that endears you to each of the characters, and there are places where I laughed out loud. I looked forward to bedtime, because I loved to snuggle up and read her books. They were terrific!
Rating: Summary: Cute Stories Review: Jan Karon is a completely gifted writer. The Mitford series are a good way to relax. But beware if you are the type of reader who likes a good mystery or thriller. These books do not have a very exciting plot and unless you are for a simple read, these books are not for you.
Rating: Summary: Hats Off to Jan Karon! (dyoung@graceland.edu) Review: Where do I begin to describe the wonder and beauty of a place called Mitford? Normally, I read romance and murder mystery novels, but after reading the Mitford series, have no desire to pick up anything else. They have transported me to a higher plane and inspired me to be a better Christian, better friend, better mother, and better wife. Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, Barnabus, Uncle Billy . . . all the characters are real people to me. I feel like I should walk outside and see them on the street. They are honest and caring and giving and very, very human. The difference that Father Tim has made in the lives of everyone around him is a perfect example of what the Holy Spirit can do in the life of a believer. And what a difference a dog, a boy, a wife, and a household filled to the brim with happiness and confusion has made in his own life. That's what life is all about. Learning and growing and becoming the kind of people that God wants us to me. Hats off to Jan Karon!
Rating: Summary: Finally! Review: Finally, a series of books that are a great read AND you won't be embarressed if your mother-in-law or child picks them up off the coffee table! Thank you, Jan Karon, for writing books that make "wholesome" facinating.
Rating: Summary: Feeling at home in Mitford Review: These books were recommended to me by my future mother-in-law and I loved them! I went through the whole series in a month. As I read each book I grew closer and closer to each character. Jan Karon's vivid descriptions of Mitford allowed my imagination to go and create these characters in my mind. No matter what race you are, Mitford is a town that anyone can live in. I highly recommend these books.
Rating: Summary: All the MITFORD Series Books Review: Reading these books are like viewing a picture of Thomas Kinkade painting in his *Hometown Memories* series and being invited to go inside and meet everyone. Each book was as entertaining and I got to enjoy getting to know every new friend I met! Father Tim & Cynthia could take me along to any and all new interim pastorates they encounter and I'd have my mental bag packed to join them at a moment's notice!
Rating: Summary: Boxed set of Mitford books Review: I liked getting all 4 of the first set of Mitford books all at once. (Good price, too!) I just finished book #1, and am now starting in on book #2. It was MOST enjoyable. (Literally a "page turner!") Too bad Mitford is imaginary. It would be nice to live in a town (like Mitford) where people take time to CARE about their neighbors, and help them, and just talk and visit with them, too. Even those that you don't think you have a lot in common with. (Wish I wrote this series!) I'm glad to see that editors and publishers will publish books like this, instead of only crime, sex, and/or sensationalistic books. It's nice to see that decent, wholesome stories can get published too, (and become BEST sellers, too!) instead of only stories like Jackie Collins writes, etc.
Rating: Summary: How do I get to Mitford? Review: I've read each of the Mitford books, and I can hardly wait for the next one! Jan Karon does a fantastic job of building her characters. You really feel like you get to know them. I typically read the fast-paced action books, but I could curl up with the Mitford books for hours and not get bored!
Rating: Summary: Why aren't there more books like these? Review: Aaah...how refreshing to read a series that leaves you longing for the author to HURRY UP AND WRITE THE NEXT ONE! You absolutely fall IN LOVE with Father Tim and his little town's antics. Mitford is hysterically funny, yet delightfully charming. I can't say I'd want to live there, but it sounds just precious to read about and come to know the characters who do reside there. Karon has created 5 masterpieces in this series. God's Speed to your pen, Mrs. Karon!
