Rating: Summary: A Game of Thrones was an amazing, fast paced book Review: This book was very good, especially with the way Martin is able to thread all of the plots together to weave an truly mistical and exciting story.
Rating: Summary: In 5 pages, I was transported inside Martin's world. Review: I usually don't read fantasy novels. It seems that many of them are too predictable or a bit cliche. A Game of Thrones is neither of these. Martin's writing is both intelligent and exciting with surprises where you wouldn't expect them. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed the book. I'm a picky reader but I recommend this book for those who want a brilliant escape.
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: What makes a book really good? A true understanding of human nature, and the ability to create truly engaging characters that will leave an impression long after you put the book down. Add an excellent plot, and you will have something special. George R. R. Martin has mastered the art of making a god book. Bravo! Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: EXTRAORDINARY Review: In the autumn of 97 i went out for a trip around Europe, in Germany i bought (because of the size!) the novel Games of Thrones by George RR Martin and i read and read and enjoyed this damn book for the hole trip. I remember being on the Greece ferry on my way to Italy, that night i read 200 pages i think, How would I have managed without this book? For you all who read's this, Buy the book immediately!! If the size scares ya, don't be afraid, when you've read the book you wish it would never finish!!!
Rating: Summary: Catalyst.. Review: I have been reading fantasy for veery long. As soon as i was of susceptible age, my father gave me a copy of "The Hobbit". Since then, after Tolkiens all time classic had set the ball in motion, I have consumed series after series, author after author, and I have found great pleasure in the genre as well as a profound knowledge and experience in what to expect from a good fantasy book. What this book has to offer (referring to "the game of thrones") is exactly what im talking about. I admit to being somewhat of a mindless deciple of Jordans Wheel of Time greatness, as well as Tolkiens Middle Earth, and I never thought I would encounter an author to rival these giants. But with the song of ice and fire series, Martin has created an immensely believable yet entrancing and magical world. The way he focuses each chapter, by name, on an individual, makes it easier to follow, and towards the end I got frustrated whenever the title of the chapter wasn't "Eddard", which brings me to yet another revelation: Martin does something uncharacteristically dramatic with Ned's fate. Very unlike the genre, but very intriguing. Two thumbs up!!
Rating: Summary: The Best Fantasy Series of All-Time Review: Mark my words, when Martin's four-book extravaganza is completed, it will go down in history as the best fantasy series of all-time. I talked to a representative at BDD (Martin's publisher) who has read snippets of the unfinished manuscript for A CLASH OF KINGS. He said that this book is going to take imaginative fiction to new levels, and put previous so-called works of "epic" fantasy to shame. George R.R. Martin is THE best fantasy writer around. If you haven't read A GAME OF THRONES yet, do so immediately. P.S. Look for a story by George R.R. Martin in the anthology LEGENDS: STORIES BY THE MASTERS OF MODERN FANTASY, to be published by TOR in October 1998. Martin will be contributing a 100+ page story set in the world of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. I guess he'll have to build a new set of shelves to hold all the awards he's going to take home in the coming year. He's already got a handful for A GAME OF THRONES, and there's still three books left in the series (A CLASH OF KINGS, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, THE WINDS OF WINTER).
Rating: Summary: AN ABSOLUTE 10! Review: Unlike many novels of this genre, this one uses the supernatural only as a delicate seasoning, enhancing, not overpowering. The real story is in the characters, exotic settings, and intense rivalries. My only complaint is why the author is keeping us waiting for the second course!
Rating: Summary: WHAT A BOOK!!!! Review: Wow! I finally have read a book that incorporates realism, fantasy, maturity, politics, and REAL life in a made up REALISTIC era of the Dark Ages. I CANNOT get enough of this book and I NEED the next BOOK NOW!!!
Rating: Summary: wonderful: intriguing plot line, excellent characters Review: Couldn't put this one down . . . and keep hoping that the next book will be finished sooner. These characters stay with you long after the book ends.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Fantasy books I've read in a long long time! Review: With just a hint of magic, this political fantasy pulls you in with excellent writing and very strong characterizations. Allegory and symbolism are big factors in this saga and the imagery is strong and clear. This book is just a warm up for the real story yet to come. Wonderful reading.
