Rating: Summary: Outstanding!!! Review: This was my first fantasy novel. I really had no interest in reading fantasy before. I heard this was an extraordinary book. I heard right. This is a master piece. Tolkien brings out the child that is within us all. He takes the imagination to new heights, introducing us to an extraordinary land filled with extraordinary people and creatures; some good, some evil. Bilbo Baggins the lead character in the book is goes on an adventure that is beyond his wildest dreams. The way in which Tolkien tells this tale, is worth the read by itself. This is a masterful prelude to the 'Lord Of The Rings', the greatest fantasy epic ever written!
Rating: Summary: A lighthearted story preceding an epic adventure! Review: This book was great! It was able to capture the imaginations of both adults and children with elements of fantasy and have a both complex and easy to understand plot. It is hard to believe how Tolkein managed to create this entire world. Read the Lord of the Rings, too! It's like a Bible! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: "A wonderfully written book" Review: This book is beyond it's expectations! It is a wonderfully written, and spectacular in it's intentions. J.R.R. Tolkien is a fabulous writer! He makes sense in every word he writes! I have read only one of his books, and I am fascinated! Read this book you'll love it!
Rating: Summary: Well-written and engrossing, a pretty good book Review: I also just read The Hobbit for schools. On the surface, it's a very simple, lighthearted, uncomplicated fairy tale, which is a large part of its charm. I guess when you look deeper (as many have failed to do) you will realize that it's more complex and imaginitive than it seems. A couple of lulls, but otherwise very engrossing and exciting in many places. I would like to read The Lord of the Rings trilogy now and I really hope they're just as good.To the people who saw similarities to C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, here's something you might want to know: Lewis and Tolkien were freinds. They met often to read and discus their stories. Everyone says that their stories have deeper, Christian meanings. Just thought you'd like to know.
Rating: Summary: awful Review: this was one of the most boring books i have ever read. i finished reading the book because i had to ( i was going to have a test on it). i still failed the test b/c i hated the book so much. i could not get into the novel and the characters just bored me to death. there was no point and i dont see what is so great about the novel
Rating: Summary: The Book which defined Fantasy in this Century Review: Excuse the melodrama of the title, but after reading some of the reviews on here.... I mean come on, to call Tolkien boring and not important is to not understand that his book pointed out the direction that fantasy literature was to go in this century. Just read any article of an authors influences or some of the dedications on current fantasy novels and Tolkiens name will appear hundreds of times. All I'm saying is read the book from the perspective that there wouldn't be a "WHeel of Time" or "Belgariad" or "Magician series" without the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
Rating: Summary: Exciting and engrossing Review: I just read The Hobbit for school. I liked it very much. Itis a wee bit childish, but I don't think adults can't appreciate it,too. Besides, it was based on bedtime stories Tolkien told his children, so why shouldn't it be childish? I skimmed over a lot of the descriptive passages at times because I was more interested in just getting it done (That isn't the book's fault, it's just that I wanted to get it done). But what I did read was very descriptive. The adventures were pretty exciting and the story was pretty engrossing. Interesting characters and lively plot, as well. I would like to read the Lord of the Rings books; no doubt they're just as good.
Rating: Summary: incredibly captivating if you like fantasy Review: fantasy lovers will find this book well worth their time, but don't try to read too much into it...some have said that there are conections to christianity, but even if there aren't the book is very well written and hard to put down...Tolkein catches you with riddles, songs, and tales that will draw your attention like a moth to the flame...so unless you plan to take the time to finish Bilbo's saga by reading the trilogy of the Lord of the Rings, don't start with the Hobbit because you won't be able to stop!
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I really liked that book, it was fun reading, not to difficult from the language yet still binding! - the only reason it got only 4 stars is that 5 stars should be reserved for The Lord of the Rings! One thing I don't like about this book (as well as about the LOTR) is that there are so many different prints - having pictures in them from different artist rather than those painted from Tolkien himself.
Rating: Summary: Excellent piece for starters in fantasy literature Review: I was taken by the almost lyrical prose used Tolkien to describe the adventures of Bilbo, the reluctant adventurer. I would strongly recommend this book to people who would like to build a library of fantasy literature
