Summary: A must for any avid reader!
Review: I paid the extra money and bought the hardback illustrated version of The Hobbit. It is one of the finest books in my collection. I just finished reading it for the first time, at age 26, and can't wait to dive into The Lord of the Rings. I highly recomend this book to anyone considering purchasing it. The illustrations are hand-painted and are of a very high quality. The book is printed on glossy paper, with very good binding. And the cover is embroidered with a gold dragon on the cover, and gold lettering along the spine. Well worth the money!

Summary: Great book filled with Adventure!
Review: The Hobbit puts you in another world with unique characters. The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is dragged somewhat reluctantly out of his nice comfortable Hobbit hole to help some Dwarves reclaim their stolen treasure. Many times when they are facing enemies such as spiders and trolls, Bilbo longs to be sitting in his easy chair by the fire. Everyone can relate to that!

Summary: Pure and Simple
Review: Cute. This is a simple child's tale that serves as a nice springboard to the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. It stands by itself as a nice story, yet is good enough to make you rush for the real McCoy- the next three books. The fertility of Tolkien's mind is amazing, and the places and creatures described in the Hobbit are such that it would have taken scores of other writers several lifetimes to conceive of them. Bilbo Baggins and his company are loveable characters, and my only criticism of the tale is that they seem to escape every jam they find themselves in, to the point that you stopped wondering whether or not they would make it with each new challenge that presented itself.

Summary: The adventure of Bilbo Baggins - a fantasy treasure!
Review: Not until age 40 did I get around to read the wonderful story of the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, an unlikely hero who was picked by the wizard Gandalf to join a band of bearded dwarves to reclaim a stolen fortune from the dragon Smaug.

The Hobbit is captivating without any dull points in the story line. The descriptions of the imaginary world reflect Tolkien's unrivaled creative genius.

If you have not read The Hobbit I highly recommend this enjoyable work of fiction.

Summary: A delightful read
Review: I read this book about 15 years ago & didn't enjoy it much. So I wasn't expecting to enjoy it the 2nd time as well, but 15 years can change a lot of your perceptions. The book was engaging and delightful. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I found myself enjoying (and thinking about) some of the hidden messages throughout the book.

If you read this book when you were a kid, you should definitely pick it up again as an adult.

Summary: Delightful story, brilliant illustration
Review: As I wrote about its big brother, "The Lord of the Rings", I will also about "The Hobbit": that everthing good about it has been said, suffice it to say, it is is amazing. This review refers specifically to the edition illustrated by Alan Lee. While it is more expensive than many other editions, no other captures the whimsy and adventure of the novel so eloquently. Like many of us, Alan Lee has clearly fallen in love with Middle Earth. Unlike many of us, he can capture our imagination and set it to canvas. This is an outstanding edition, worthy of one of the great tales of all time.

Summary: A great book, my precioussss
Review: My favorite thing about the Hobbit (and indeed all Tolkien books) is the fact that they can be enjoyed just as well by people of all ages. I recently read The Hobbit again and found it to be just as charming as it was when I was young. The adventure, the humor, the unique characters, and the mythology make it a true fantasy classic and the book that really launched an entire genre.

I love the way this prequel ties in so nicely with the rest of the series, as well. Who would have thought that the quirky events in this little book were to lay the groundwork for the dire War of the Rings? A fine piece of literature, this, and one that will be enjoyed well through the "forth age" and into the fifth.

Summary: A wonderful fantasy
Review: This book is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit who lived a quiet life except for a single, life-altering year. He is recruited by a wizard named Gandalf to accompany a band of dwarves on their quest to reclaim the land and fortune that is rightfully theirs by slaying the dragon who took it from them. Bilbo is a reluctant hero, but nevertheless a memorable one. And his tale is an extraordinary flight of fancy that will stay in your heart forever. I am extremely picky about which books I like to reread, but after reading this for the first time I am sure that there will be a second, as well as a third and fourth. Tolkien is a masterful storyteller, and the world he creates is so vivid and well-conceived that it is easy to lose yourself in the forests of Mirkwood, the Misty Mountains or the desolate Lonely Mountain. Bilbo's adventure is captivating from one leg of the journey to the next. "The Hobbit" touches on issues of greed, courage and friendship without ever losing focus or seeming preachy. The only fault I can find is with me, for not reading it sooner.
