Rating: Summary: Welcome to Middle Earth Review: "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien is the fantasy epic that started the fantasy genre altogether. Tolkien is a master of the English language and his wonderful writing and beautiful world make one of the best novels of fantasy literature. For those who are not familiar with this tale, it is the story of Bilbo Baggins and a band of dwarves that set out on an adventure to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim the treasure of an old Dwarve civilization. Along the way we run into goblins, elves, giant spiders and much more intrigue. I recommend this novel to any lover of fantasy or books in general. This is the book that put me onto the fantasy genre. Tolkien makes Middle Earth seem like it's a real place with the depth that he goes into with each race of species living there. After this wonderful novel I recommend the granddaddy of all fantasy, The Lord of the Rings. Be sure to pick up this great novel. HAPPY READING!
Rating: Summary: Written for children, but still great. Review: This novel lacks much of the complexity and subtlety of LoTR, but it is still a great novel in its own respect.
Rating: Summary: There and Back Again Review: I gave this book 5 stars because that was as many as I could give. If I could give more I would! This is an entertaining, captivating and imaginative book. Tolkein creates a magical world where you feel that anything can happen (which in all truth could)and the characters he makes are both lovable (Bilbo)and despisable (e.g.Smaug). For people who love fantasy, this is the best in that context that I have ever read, save a few other well known books by the same author. I don't believe that anyone has not heard of Tolkien by now, either because of the movie Lord of the Rings or because of his reputable books. In either case, those who have not read this book (and also The Lord of The Rings series, which is a sequel of sorts to The Hobbit)READ IT NOW!!!Don't be among the minority. You won't regret it, I promise.
Rating: Summary: The hobbit Review: I read the hobbit in about 2 weeks. it is the best book I have ever read. It all starts out in a hobbit hole. Until a wizard named Gandalf comes over to Bilbo's (the hobbit.) house. He asked him if he wanted to go on a jouney to find a dragon named Smaug. But Bilbo refuses. So Gandalf brings alot of dwarves over to have a party. at Bilbo's house. So that way they wil stay there until Bilbo obey's them. So Bilbo goes with them on there journey. While they're on there way they run into some trolls. Oh I forgot. Bilbo is known as a burgler. Anyway. Bilbo finds a wallet. But it turns out to be one of the trolls wallets. They find Bilbo with it. so they take him and all but 1 dwarf captive. But Bilbo makes them fight so that they can escape. They got away. Then they go into a troll home. they find swords and different wepons. They try and find a shelter to sleep in. But when they got into it a bunch of trolls catch the dwarves. But they don't catch Gandalf. The trolls show the hobbit and the dwarves to there king. Gandalf comes in the room and kills the trolls. As they're running away from the mountain Dori ( a dwarf.) who is carrying Bilbo drops him. Bilbo wakes up next to a guy named Gollum. He said he will let bilbo go if he answers a riddle correct. So Gollum asks Bilbo a bunch of questions. It takes Bilbo a while to guess the right answer. When he lets Bilbo go he finds a ring. They go to a guy named Beorn. He lets them stay for a day and then let them be on there journey. The hobbit, Gandalf, and the dwarves go to the woods. Gandalf leaves the dwarves. Some Elves capture the dwarves. But Bilbo has on is ring. It makes him invisible. The Elves lock up the Dwarves. But Bilbo lets them free. They ride some barrles down a river. They end up on the doorstep of Smaug. They run into a cave so smaug won't find them. They escape while Smaug is asleep. But Smaug wakes up. He goes to a town. A man named Bard Shoots him with a bow a arrow. Now, back to the dwarves a Bilbo. A little before the end Gandalf comes back. Well I can't tell you the end because this is an online review. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: The Hobbit To the End and Back Review: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Who wrote this line? J.R.R. Tolkien did. This book is a fantasy adventure about a band of dwarves, one wizard called Gandalf, and a hobbit called Bilbo Bagins. Together they embark on a journey to retrieve a lost treasure form a terrible dragon. On their journey they face Trolls, Goblins, and Wood Elves. This is one of my personal favorites. This is a fantasy adventure like no other. I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy adventures. This book is a prelude to Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Rating: Summary: Utterly captivating Review: This is the story of how Bilbo Baggins obtained the powerful ring and found sources of bravery and courage within himself through his adventures with the dwarves and Gandalf the wizard. I was spellbound within a few pages and was astounded at how energetic and compelling the story is. And this was published in 1937! I believe the reason for the book's longevity is that "The Hobbit" is about a character challenging himself and proving himself (to himself and to others), which is something to which everyone can relate. This is certainly a masterpiece of storytelling.
Rating: Summary: what an imagination Review: When I first read The Hobbit I was 13 and although I did not fully understand everything and the language was not easy I loved it and finished it in a day. I could not put it down. Now I am older (I`m 20) and I see and read books deferently. I judge them and try to be more critical about them, but THE HOBBIT is still one of my favourite books. I admire the author because of his imagination that has no limits. The language is rich and colourfull and the characters very interesting. It is something everybody who want to escape the everyday life and spend at least a couple of hours in a magical world, should read. We get to know Bilbo - a hobbit that starts on an adventure. he travels trough the Middle Earth with a group or dwarfs. He joins them as a thief (he cam move very quietly) on a quest to the home of the dragon Smaug, who guards an old treasure that origilally belonged to dwarfs. On his way he also meets a strange creature called Gollum and from him he gets a very special and magical object (I will not tell you what it is in case you haven`t heard it, read it, or seen the movie yet :), but you can imagine what it is right?) It is also the begininng of something much larger, it is the starting point for the Lotd of the Rings. Tolkien`s source was the celtic and nordic mythology, but he created creatures of hisown also - the Hobbits and also the Vargs. He created a new elven lenguage. It is less complicated than Lord of the Rings and notably written for a slightly younger public, but it is one of the masterpieces of fantasy and it always will be.
Rating: Summary: There And Back Again Review: Want to know the background to the Lord of the Rings? Want to know how Bilbo Baggins really got his magic ring? Want to know more about Hobbits? Look no further. The Hobbit is a delightful book about Bilbo Baggins' journey with 13 dwarves to recover their lost riches beneath the Lonely Mountain, taken by Smaug the dragon. Encouraged by Gandalf the wizard, he sets off with 13 dwarves on a quest to recover the hidden treasure beneath the mountain. On the way he has many adventures, including finding a magical golden ring which makes him invisible-not bad in hiding from enemies! He also meets wood elves in the forest of Mirkwood, fights wolves and giant spiders, is rescued by giant eagles, and finally returns home with his share of the dragon's treasure. One of the best chapters is where he finds the ring beneath the Misty mountains, and has to win a riddling game with Gollum to get out of the deep caves where he is lost. It's written mainly for children around the 10 year range, but older readers will find a refreshing tale of hobbits, dwarves, elves, men and wizardy; courage and light-heartedness, and learn much about the background to the Lord of the Rings as well. If you intend to read all of J.R.R.Tolkien's books, you should probably read this one first, as it was the first to be published, and is set just before the events of the Lord of the Rings take place. It isn't too long, and is almost certainly going to be made into a feature film eventually, after the Lord of the Rings is finished screening I'd say. Oh, and one more thing, the best edition is definitely the illustrated edition by Tolkien artist Alan Lee-his artistry is exquisite!
