Rating: Summary: A Compelling and Captivating Fantasy Review: This is a great tale of the change that just a little hobbit can make to the world, and to himself. Bilbo Baggins a small hobbit of hobbiton invited a guest over one day to share a cup of tea. That guest in turn turned into many guests who would pressure him to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. After a dance and a party, 12 dwarves and a wizard (Gandalf) would inform Bilbo that he was to be the burglar on their journey to take the treasure from the great dragon Smaug. After one night Bilbo and the others set out on their journey. They encountered many obstacles but in the end Bilbo could almost always be trusted with the rescue of his group. I like how J. R. Tolkien laid out this story as a great prequel to the lord of the rings trilogy. She explains many main characters as well as the plot very descriptively. She does not, however, explain the significance of the most important item in her series, the ring. She does though display the recent origin and some of its magic. But I think there is a subtle message in this story, the smallest being can make the biggest difference. The small little hobbit, that at one point was scared to leave his smug house, soon emerged to become the great warrior that he was. This Hobbit would still a ring from and out riddle a sea-demon. Break into an Elfish castle, free his friends, and guide them to safety. He would also deal with a dragon, and steal a plot of treasure that could last a million lifetimes. But his greatest accomplishment was maturing to realize that when in danger you have to step up. This is a great adventure and a fine read. I advise this to anyone, who like me wants a compelling book that keeps you into the story. If you do read this, however, look for the subtle messages, they are the most important.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book Review: The Hobbit , Or There And Back Again , is a fantastic book for children and adults. This is the perfect adventure book and best story of our time. The Lord Of The Rings is another fantastic book by the author J.R.R. Tolkien , but it would be a lot better that you read The Hobbit before The Lord Of The Rings because it tells of how the hobbit Bilbo Baggins found his magic ring , which is called the evil one ring in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy books , in Gollums cave under the Misty Mountains. And The Hobbit tells of how Bilbo Baggins , Gandalf the Wizard , and a company of thirteen dwarves run into a lot of trouble with trolls , goblins , wolves , giant spiders and more on there adventure to reclaim the gold in The Lonely Mountain gaurded by a greedy dragon named Smaug. It is a long journey to The Lonely Mountain , and excitement awaits in this brilliantly told classical tale The Hobbit. So if you have never read this book , then what are you waiting for! Read it now! ITS THE BEST BOOK EVER!
Rating: Summary: A Great Motivational Kick in the Rear Review: One day in my darkest hour, I was at a bookstore and picked up "The Hobbit". A cartoon I had only seen when I five years old a long time ago. I bought it and read it. All I could think through this whole book was I do matter.Corney I know!!!! But it made me see that even the most insignifigant or unassuming person can be the crucial factor in the fate of the world or situation. I saw that all of us are more than we seem, when we need to be. Now when I feel beaten by the world and it can't get any worse I take a very ragged and worn copy of "The Hobbit" to remind me of why I keep my hopes alive.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting Prequel to "Lord Of The Rings" Review: It's been over twenty years since I last read "The Hobbit"; I wonder why I've waited so long. Although written originally for children, J. R. R. Tolkien's epic tale of the quest undertaken by the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, and thirteen dwarves is an enchanting saga which should interest adults too. It's a fascinating, often gripping, tale, recounting Bilbo's adventures as he and his companions confront trolls, goblins, giant spiders and unfriendly elves before battling the great dragon Smaug. Bilbo's discovery of the One Ring of Power and his fateful encounter with Gollum is merely a minor aspect of this tale. Fans of "The Lord of the Rings" as well as those interested in reading a great work of fantasy shall not be disappointed with "The Hobbit".
Rating: Summary: Fun & Inspiring Read Review: The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, is a character most of us can relate to. He likes to eat and is a bit overweight. Bilbo desires adventure, but he would prefer to stay home and enjoy a quiet life. He prefers the familiar to the unknown. But once in a while something bigger than us gets in the way. The Hobbit's adventure begins when he is chosen by the wizard Gandalf to be part of a team that travels across Middle Earth to restore the dwarf kingdom of Thorin Oakenshield. The group must travel over the mountains, through a treacherous forest, up another mountain that is inhabited by a terrible dragon, sleigh the dragon, recover the treasure, and restore the kingdom. This book is the story of how a little Hobbit rises to the occasion, and takes on the challenge. I highly recommend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down Review: I read this book in two weeks, for me that is pretty fast. I loved everything about this book, the adventures, the ending, everything. I can't wait to read the next one Lord of The Rings!!
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Different from Lord of the Rings Review: The Hobbit, first published in the mid-1930's, is a wonderfully inventive story. If you're expecting it to be the same style and intensity as Lord of the Rings you may be disappointed. This story, while having it's dramatic moments, is more mellow and tongue-in-cheek than LOTR. In reading this you get the impression that Tolkein was enjoying himself as much as we have enjoyed reading it. I must have read this book at least 15 times between 1975 and 1990. It has been years though, and with the new release of the movie I decided to re-introduce myself to an old friend. The Hobbit is a tale about Bilbo Baggins (a relatively minor character in LOTR) and his adventures with 13 dwarfs to reclaim their treasure. Initially led by the wizard Gandalf the troop encounter trolls, goblins, elves, giant spiders, and of course THE DRAGON. What I liked the most about the story is that Tolkien really uses his sense of humor throughout, something missing in LOTR. Of course we get to meet two characters who play important roles in LOTR: Elrond, the Elf Lord, and Gollum. The story follow the group from the beginning of their journey in the Shire, their trek across the wilderness where they are waylaid by trolls, and over (and under) the misty mountains where they are captured by goblins. It is here that Bilbo finds 'The Ring' and his life changes forever. After their escape they make their way through mirkwood, where they are first ensnared by spiders and then imprisoned by elves. In both cases Bilbo is able to rescue them. And of course to the journey's end at the Lonely Mountain and their confrontation with Smaug the dragon. The tale ends on a sad yet uplifing note of redemption. Although you can read Lord of the Rings, or even watch the movie, without reading The Hobbit first why would you want to?It's just much more fun to read this beforehand. I would also recommend "The Simarillon", Tolkien's mythology of middle earth. This book gives you the complete history of the elves and the first two ages, leading up to the events told here.
