Of particular value are the illustrations and portraits of how tartan garments were worn in times past. Kilts, for instance, are fairly modern. The author is careful to show examples of everything he writes about, from the simple scrap of shepherd's plaid found in a Roman excavation, to the London Jacobite all dressed in tartan knee breaches, weskit, and coat.
