Review: Elaine Sturtavent is a radical ... She set the art world on it's ear by coppying the work of Johns, Warhol, Beuys and many others brush stroke for brush stroke. She did movies too. Remember Warhol's notoriouse nine hour film of The Empire State Building? Sturtavent refilmed it.
Sturtavent, for all the obviouse reasons, made a lot of people angry. "Anyone could do that." "She should think of her own stuff." On and on. Even the people who first defended her thought the joke was getting old. But she wasn't jokeing, she was dead serious. By redoing the work of others, the line was now blurred between the original and the origin. She made paintings that made you think rather than see. A painting by Sturtavent can't be coppied....think about it.
I recomed this book--despite its flaws--because its the only book about a great artist whos star will soon rise.
Long live Sturtavent.
