Review: A thin, long rectangle of a monograph. High-quality, firm paper is used throughout, so that even when the plates are small the images are excellent. Demand's ouevre is advanced and consistent (it has garnered him a retrospective at MoMA in the Spring). Even the essay is worth reading, which is rare in discussions of his work. All the paper, photocopiers, desks, communication devices, and recorders, exacerbate the absence of lettering and writing from his constructions. Faces are obliterated from portraits. Demand's flimsy sculptural world seems to sag without the scaffolding of signification. One cannot hope that the next exhibition catalog will be as successful as this Italian production.
