Rating: 4 stars
Summary: design primer
Review: I have been looking for an updated replacement for this out of print book for a long time. The table of contents provides concrete topics that are not-redundant and importantly allow us to delve into 3 dimensions at the same time we are learning fundamental principles of 2-dimensional graphic design. It is a rare book that starts to fill the gap between a study of graphic design and a study of architectural design. The topics are general enough to apply to both 2-D and 3-D design; such as, primary elements, spatial forces, and visual kinetics. Architectural design training could be well supplemented by de Sausmerez's treatment of "the two-dimensional field and the space frame", "analytical drawing", and "subjective color". It's a great outline for a design study that could be augmented for architects by contributions from authors Francis Ching, Wucius Wong, and Le Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture.
