Boime maps the pedagogical devlopment of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and then discusses the techniques, brushes, canvases, etc. used in the academy in the nineteenth century. The book is pretty dry, but the work that went into it makes it valuable to any scholar of modern French painting.
