Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Celebrating Women's Work in Art
Review: This collection of essays is indispensable for anyone interested in women's contributions to fine art of the 19th century. Despite its original focus on the artist Barbara Bodichon (a close friend of the author George Eliot) the essays included provide a comprehensive overview of the issues all female artists faced in acquiring education and social acceptance, as well as well-researched insights on their work as critics and feminist activists. All essays are by top scholars in the field and complement more focused studies such as Deborah Cherry's 'Painting Women: Victorian Women Artists' (1993), and Pamela Gerrish Nunn's 'Canvassing' (1986). The collection's only notable drawback is the lack of a summary bibliography.
