Rating: Summary: All about the crazy business of show Review: Phillip Rose, the producer of "Raisin in the Sun", "Purlie Victorious" and other Broadway hits has written a very intelligent and entertaining autobiography. The first half of the book centers on his production of Lorraine Hansberry's play "A Raisin in the Sun". It details his efforts to raise the money for such a controversial play, the out of town tryout, the Broadway opening night when it became a hit. He also tells of the backstage squabbles and his cool relationship with Sidney Portier. Above all, he tells of the warm friendship he enjoyed with Ms Hansberry. It is very touching when he describes the angst they endured trying to get her play on its legs. The friendship was ended when her husband took over her life and she died of cancer in 1965. It has a lot of humor and he goes on to describe his other theatrical adventures that extended into the late 70's. He is now 80 and officially retired. We are glad you gave us these memories Mr Rose

Rating: Summary: A wonderful read Review: This book is written beautifully and is quite interesting... I've even gotten more of a live version since Mr. Rose visited my school and talked to us for 2 whole hours. He is of such strong character, and his book really displays that. He overcame all the prejudices of his time and set many precedents for Broadway plays to come. All of this and more are discussed in his attention-grabbing story. Also, I would like to add that Mr. Rose is actually currently leaving retirement and will direct a play about the controversial issue of abortion. Fun reading for you all!!!
