Description:
It's not just cheeseheads that will love this book--anyone who admires unusual dog breeds and Humane Society work is sure to appreciate it as well. Each page of The Dogs of Madison gives us an adorable photo and a short background of the pictured dog, all living in Madison, Wisconsin, or the surrounding county. Many of them were adopted through the local Humane Society, and a portion of the book's proceeds go to this organization. Some photos, such as that of an American pointer standing at the edge of a lake, are accompanied by a humorous fact of the dog's life--in this case, the bird dog in question is afraid of birds. Others, such as Odie and Rosie, spend time visiting nursing homes and schools, sharing affection and education. The giant Neapolitan mastiff Franny helps the shelter by testing new dogs for aggressiveness--if they're bold enough to get aggressive with Franny, who knows what they might do? The tiny Snickers has a particularly dangerous habit. No matter what sort of fencing his family tries, Snickers prefers the middle of the road. He's been run over three times, but the photo shows him once again in his favorite spot--right in the path of oncoming traffic. Keeshounds, akitas, boxers, Rhodesian ridgebacks, and vizlas are just a few of the more exotic breeds the authors tracked down in this dog-loving city, but you'll also find a healthy sprinkling of lovable mutts. --Jill Lightner
