Rating: Summary: The Greatest Summary of the NYC Basketball Legends & Poetry Review: If you have that true love for the game of basketball and where it started than buy this book. It may not have a lot of writing, but it shows the writing in the biographical summaries of the greats the "Goat", "Destroyer", "Tiny", etc. Even know I didn't see any of the greats I still read about them. Much love to the "Goat" who stood before them all, who past away last year. Watch the movie "Rebound"!
Rating: Summary: Sorry, I regret buying it. Review: Just some information about the street legends. Good quality paper and cover and some advertorial kind of pictures. That's all. I am very sorry but it is a wrong choice for me at least.

Rating: Summary: tthe Goat: R.I.P. Review: Last week, one of the greatest playground players ever to grace a NY court passed away of heart failure. The Goat was an inspiration to several generations of kids and ball players in NYC and was featured in "Soul of the Game". It was an honor to have met and worked with the Goat. One of my most treasured photos is a group shot that I took 2 years ago with the Goat, Pee W ee Kirkland, Jackie Jackson and Joe Hammond; some of the greatest legends of the court in NYC. Each of them have been featured in a TV spot created by Wieden & Kennedy and Nike. The Goat was the star of two spots, "36 Dunks" and "Sittin' on the Rim".May this great player rest in peace.
Rating: Summary: Love of the game. Review: Soul of the Game was created to celebrate the game of basketball at its purest level,on the playground court. In today's sports environment where media hype, big sports contracts and money rules; there remains a part of the game where you can still be a hero in your own neighborhood. It's where NBA talent used to come to prove their skills and where today they may face the toughest critics, fans and even players. The playground spawned the unique urban style of play that affected the old ABA which then changed the game in the NBA.
One of the great joys in creating this book with photographer, John Huet and writer, Jimmy Smith was the ability and hope of sharing these great legends of the playground court to a new generation. Rather than simply tell the stories ourselves, we invited young poets and rappers to tell it from their perspective and emotions.
It is difficult for many of the fans today to appreciate just how influential these "unknowns" were to the game and how even today, the playground court remains a major proving ground for talent. Because of the media hype, the thirst by the public for stars and the need from booksellers to have celeberty
subjects, this book is probably is risk for our publishers, Melcher Media and Workman Publishing.
This book, while it includes some NBA stars of the past (only if they had the street "props"), concentrates more on the past and present "legends". These are players who have lived beyond their playing years, many of whom who did not play major college basketball nor with any NBA experience. Yet, they are as known in the neighborhoods through word of mouth and folklore.
This book does not deal with the game simply at a media hyped superficial level but rather exposes the importance, elegance and creativity of the game from an insider's view.
I hope readers will respond with their own comments.
The photographs from this book were featured in an exhibition at the prestigious International Center of Photography which will now possibly move to the Field Museum n Chicago and to a major west coast gallery in Portland Oregon later this year. For more information on the book, see the reviews in The New York Times and USA Today (both selected Soul of the Games as one of the season's best) as well as the Oregonian..
Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: This was a very great book. It was very intristing . John Jay is very creative is is way cool. But I do think the reading level was a little low....... But any way that doesnt matter. As a 11 year old, I thought this book was great!!!
Rating: Summary: One BIG Nike ad Review: While the images of street basketball players are interesting, the whole book looks like one big plug to sell Nike products. The best part of the book is the poetry which stands out because of the diverse rhythms and distinctive voices. The pictures all seem staged, so what is the point?
