Rating: Summary: The intentions behind this book Review: This book is the result of a concious decision to write a "how to do" darkroom book with a different emphasis. It was intended to be the sort of book I wish I'd had available years ago when trying to learn how to advance my printing skills beyond basic and then intermediate level. I found the "bandaid to brain surgery"approach in so many books frustrating as it seemed that the easy "bandaid" bits often got excessive space whereas the difficult "brain surgery" sections contained insufficient detail to put them into practice - sometimes just a paragraph. This book is an attempt to reverse that approach. The more advanced or complex a technique the greater the detail it gets - not the other way round.18 pages on toning, 13 on multiple printing, and so on. Everything in this book is based on personal experience and works as described with practice. There are no hidden secrets and no 'copied down' techiques that don't work properly ( another frustration!) I am grateful and touched for all the kind comments received from readers all over the word in reponse to this approach - thank you.
Rating: Summary: A very inspiring and easy to understand guide to creative da Review: This book is very inspiring and written in an easy to understand style. After reading it you will want to run into your darkroom and try Tim's creative techniques. Tim is a great communicator!
Rating: Summary: Excellent manual, Superb photography. Review: This is a perfect combination of Technique and Art so rarely acieved these days. The book covers advanced printing techniques (such as toning, burning/dodging, flashing, etc) better than any other book I have seen (I have seen a few). And it is all done with a sense of artistic purpose: you get to see why the Artist chooses to use one or another technique. This is an incredible book for those who want to improve their B&W printing, and even for those who simply love good photography: the book is full of excellent photographs
