Rating: Summary: Well written, well organized, beautifully illustrated. Review: I am interested in architecture, but not an architect. I found this book to be an excellent guide to 20th century American architecture, specifically the various movements and their underlying theories (in a nutshell), the leading personalities, and many significant buildings. There are many outstanding photographs, beatifully printed in a generous size (I hate looking at tiny photos of large buildings, or too large photos of a chair). The chapters have clever, alliterative names, a great deal of care has gone into this book. My only wish was that it would have had an index in the back of the book of all the buildings mentioned, listed by state and city, so that one might be sure to look at them if one happened to pass through that town. (The author is not afraid to criticize, and say why, or praise, and say why, but this is never intrusive, it comes across as intelligent and reasonable opinion, that one can consider and agree or disagree. Highly recommended if you are interested in current architecture and its evolution.
