Summary: The Actor and the Target
Review: Donnellan's book is an excellent read for actors, their coaches, and their teachers. The author focuses on the psychology of actors and their concerns, their problems, and the difficulties they have in the creative process. It is written in the language of theater performers, but it is accessible for any layperson interested in the process of acting. In short and pithy bursts of insight, the author identifies and very simply exposes many of the common concerns and insecurities of actors. One finds nothing pedantic or indulgent, but indeed many answers--thoroughly and concisely discussed--garnered from a career of working with actors in rehearsal and performance. Indeed, Donnellan reduces what in other books would be entire chapters to straightforward, accurate, simple material. ^BSumming Up: Essential. Required reading for young actors entering the profession and for their teachers
