Summary: Read Flood! Instaid
Review: Drooker is cool. Flood! is cool. But Blood Song really isn't. Reading Blood Song I couldn't help compare it to the previous novel. This story seems very similar to the one in Flood! but not as complex, I was hoping for something differnt. Also, this book is a much quicker read, despite being more than twice as big as Flood!. This is because the drawings are less detailed and require less attention. The story doesnt make much sense (apparently the protagonist crosses the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat) and the ending is ridiculous. I would seriously recommed you get Flood! and ask for Blood Song as a gift from a friend. That way you won't feel bad you spent your money on it.

Summary: Beauty Marred by Agenda
Review: Drooker's one conceit here is the beauty of his work. Every page of the book features woodcut scenes with colour for mood, and is accomplished and aesthetically pleasing. Praises can end there, however.

Blood Song is supposed to be a wonder to read and behold for the fact that there is not a single word balloon - no dialogue, no narrative. And though Drooker certainly propells his story forawd through the pages of silence, on might hope that he could offer better than the overly simple tale of a hapless, honest, and beautiful native girl and the vile, oppressive, and censorious authority figures. Really, if there's one cardinal sin a film or book can commit is that of making me feel as if I've been preached at. Blood Song is a textbook example of this.

This is the work of a freshman in college who has just discovered politics - unfortunately for Drooker, college was well over twenty years ago.

Summary: graphic and powerful
Review: Graphic and powerful story of a girl's escape from an invading army, flight from her native land, arrival in a large and unfriendly city, love found, lost and renewal. Except for two pages of nonexplicit nudity, which some parents might object to, I would recommend this book to any mature fifth grader or adult.

Summary: picture - perfect
Review: I loved Flood, but this shows breathtaking maturity and growth. A graphic novel without words, but complete... awesome in every sense of the word.

The sub-title A "silent ballad" is quite apt, and in all ways and in all things this book is a pure symphony of images.

Congratulations to Mr Drooker. I can't wait to see what he will offer us next!

Summary: touches the soul
Review: I recommend this book highly. I have read some of the other reviews of this book and I think the negative reviews here are way too simplistic and harsh. This book has more depth than black and white. The fact is that there are many themes going on in this book and it is not simply a political novel. It is also about struggles and change that one person can endure. It is about the hope of a child. It is about fighting and struggling for what is right. It is about love and brotherhood. Please, by all means, DO NOT listen to the negative reviews. Anyone that took a simplistic view of this book obviously did not have the brain power or creativity to look deeper to what the book was really saying. This point did not have one simplistic point, it was many points that should leave you flooded with many thoughts in your head, that is of you are an intelligent individual. The fact is, the images are totally left up to interpretation- that is the beauty of pictures. It is a timeless novel which does not have to represent any particular place, time, or person. Each time I have read it, I saw something new and different, with more depth. Each time I finish the book, I have both tears in my eyes as well as hope. It brings both the beauty and sadness of life together in what appears to be black and white, but below the surface is full of color, if you look deep enough. Take my advice and read it many times.

Summary: Left me Speechless (no pun intended)
Review: I was a little hesitant to read this book but after turning the first couple of pages I was hooked. The artwork in this book is absolutely stunning. I love the little bits of colour worked into the otherwise black and white artwork because the colour is always added at exactly the right places. The story itself is very powerful and it makes you wonder. While there is no specific time or place for this book it is very possible for it to happen in this world (okay, so maybe not the row boat accross the ocean part but have you read "Life of Pi"?) the settings and events in this book are very realistic. I would definetly recommend this to anyone who is even romotely curious. This was my first graphic novel and it got me hooked so I figure that speaks for itself.

Summary: Wordless Awe...True Sequential Art
Review: I was absolutely stunned by the way this wordless tale flows so smoothly as a young girl struggles to survive in a cruel world.
Although I usually read manga (Japanese comics), which have very detailed art, the visual effects in this "silent ballad" are simple astounding, and will probably have you flipping through it over and over.
Contrary to the title, blood song doesn't have much blood (or even the color red) in it at all. However, it does require some knowlege of some things that young children probably are not familiar with. (Due to the fact that there are no words, the reader must do a good bit of interpreting...) Also, there is a tad bit of mature material in here, but the girl is interacting with the real world, after all. This is no "picture book" for preschoolers, it requires a substantial amount of literary and visual interpretations to comprehend.
This full-color graphic novel makes excellent use of the impact of a sudden burst of color in a bluish-gray environment. The ending is absolutely beautiful and feels complete. An example of what masterful sequential art looks like, this is a must read for anyone who is visual! You will not regret reading this!
