Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: So famous but not novel Review: Since prevailing French philosophy like theories of Foucault, Lacan, Derrida..., So many art historians seems like to use their language as 'politics of seeing', 'body politics'...The author of this book, Richard Leppert is not exception. He deply his position of writing on base of French philosophy or contemporary cultural theroy like Post colonialism. Contents of this book composed of 3 parts. Part 1: Sight/Sites for Seeing - about through the representation of painting, classical way of making pictures, few persons who have powers controll innocent people(mass) who not belong to main system. For simple example, at 19C some painters was drawn the money exactly(MONEY PAINTINGS) for the guests want illustion of millionaire. Part 2: Object - it's so similart with part 1. People represent(or supply) and ask (demand) the object pictures they want to have. But there is specific dogma! AS they paint the stil life, Stil life have the ANOTHER meaning - instruction on morality. For example, Flower means getting older people like fallen petals, And skull mean death directly! memento mori "Remember death" Humm.... Part 3: Body - it's so popular theme in contemporary cultural sciences. shortly speaking female body is reflection of desire of men's spectators. but through male nude painter reflect his oedipus complex in it. In conclusion. [Art and the committed eye] for students majoring art history or theory of art and interested in ART itself. But as previously titled, this book so famous and good for the side of introductory of new theory. But Not novel! Because the contens of this book already shown in other phiosophical studies and art historian's essay like John Berger [Ways of Seeing] or Mary Anne [ Believing is Seeing]... And right of choice is yours.
