While there are a few celebs (Hepburn, Mother Teresa, Billie Holiday), many of these pictures are of unknowns - rich and poor, black and white, young and old, happy and sad. This diversity is the book's secret joy. Romantic and heartfelt (not cheesy), it would be a safe and thoughtful gift for almost anyone, a provocative addition to coffee-tables everywhere.
