Rating: Summary: i love this ! Review: they are all pictures on it
Rating: Summary: No Without Error Review: This book has a lot of gruesome pictures and is not for those who wish to be shielded from the dark side of the last century. It certainly has a lot of images that makes one wish we could find a way to bring a stop to all of this horror, but this century is not off to a good start either.
I do wonder about the accuracy of this book after discovering an error. The picture on page 421 that purports to be of Nazis executing people somewhere in the baltic in 1942 is actually a picture of Nazi war criminals being executed in Poland in 1946. One wonders how many other pictures are mislabeled.
Rating: Summary: A short review of Century Review: This book is excellent! I feel as though the use of photographs to depict the last century instead of words was different and effective. With some of the photographs, I could feel sense or feel the emotions displayed, especially the photographs of the depression and World War II. The layout of the book is well done, dividing the century into transitional sections versus decades. I was slightly disappointed not to see any pictures about the Titanic. The title of the book includes the words, "progress, regression, suffering, and hope", all of which I think describe the Titanic.
Rating: Summary: Biased view of the century Review: This book takes a particular approach to the century; that is chronicalling "what we've been through", and the author puts it. There are page after page of war pictures, mostly of agony and dead bodies. There is no accounting of the extraordinary advances or achievements in science, medicine, the arts. I bought it as a gift, and it will have to be returned.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: This book will horrify and amaze you at the same time. This is the best picture history imagineable.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding documenatry in images Review: This book, as the subtitle suggests, depicts how tragic the human species has been in a century when one would have thought would have evolved beyond that of the babarians of previous years. From the ruthlessness of the Bolshivics to the hate in Hitler's eyes, from the graphic images of slavery in South Africa to the appauling site in Kosovo..........When will we learn? A must for every bookshelf
Rating: Summary: Wonderful surprise Review: This is a wonderful book. I was very pleasently surprised at the quality and scope of the photographs. I have only browsed through it but I'm looking forward to many repeat trips through its pages. A couple of small problems do not detract from the work as a whole. First, the captions for the pictures are printed in a light gray. This may make it difficult for some people to read. On the other hand, it keeps your attention on the photograph. Second, some captions are not accurate. For example, a Hubble telescope photo of gas clouds in space claims that our universe (sic) could fit in them 50 times. The writer probably meant "solar system" or "galaxy", but not universe. Finally, please note that there are many disturbing images in this book. If you have pre-high school age children you may want to supervise their perusal of the book or, at a minimum, be on hand to answer the hard questions that come up.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic book Review: This is an amazing book. I am a college history professor and this book beautifully illustrates the past century. Gorgeous shots, most of which I have never seen before, from Lenin after his stroke to a strange picture of Rosey the Riveters doing factory floor exercises. And the price? I can't believe you can get if for barely fifty bucks.
And by the way, I always fail to get a decent present for my wife (who is hard to shop for), but when I brought this one home, I scored big time. She loved it.
You cannot lose with this book. It's great history, great glimpses into human joy and tragedy, and some great photography. Of all the books I've reviewed, this one gives the most incredible bang for the buck.
Minor criticism: the historical notes are short and a bit bland. But the photographs are so great you don't really care.

Rating: Summary: A Classic, Even if Incomplete Review: This is an amazing book. It is the kind of thing you could indifferently buy for a coffee table, and then find a houseful of people surrounding it until the wee hours. The pictures are nothing short of breathtaking. It is the kind of thing that makes your heart beat faster. And it is an excellent learing tool, too, because no one is aware of every situation chronicled in this book. Don't just browse through it in bookstores (even though it's everywhere); buy it and treasure it. It surely will not disappoint. This book should be the first document of human progress in the twentieth century put into any prospective time capsules for the new millennium, which, as one reviewer rightly stated, doen't actually start until NEXT year. But hey, at least out of ignorance, we get a work of art this precious a year early!
