Rating: Summary: Theories of Modern Art Revisited Review: Because my first copy from 1968 is dog-eared and worn, I am back to purchase a second copy of Theories of Modern Art by Herschel B. Chipp. Originally, the book was required reading for a college course I took in Philosopy of Art. It is replete with insights into the thoughts and processes of making art by the giants of modern art and their critics, in the form of original quotes and letters. The various schools of art are represented, i.e. post-impressionism, symbolism and other subjective tendencies, fauvism and expressionism, cubism, futurism, neo-plasticism and constructivism, dada, surrealism and contemporary art (including both the Americans and Europeans). One comes away from this book with the feeling of knowing the artists personally. I highly recommend this source book to which you will find yourself returning, as to an old friend, as I have, time after time.
Rating: Summary: facinating look into modern artists thoughts and beliefs Review: Even if you are not interested in the arts but simply in thought process- I think you will find this book very interesting. You could say this is the history of modern art without pictures (although there are some pictures)- bringing the reader facinating insights into how different types of artists came to their philosophies of art, and of course, the world. Documented through personal letters, manifestos, and articles, the varity of different thoughts and beliefs catapolts just what art can be. To me it shows that art is a never ending universe of ideas- all connecting but all very individual just the same.
Rating: Summary: Into the mind of the artists Review: How often had I looked at a painting of Van Gough and wondered what exactly was this great man thinking when he conceived and painted such a picture. Now by reading thru this excellent book, I can claw into the mind of artists themselves.

Rating: Summary: WOW Review: I hate art more than I already did after having read this book and attempted to make use of it in art class. Artists are all a bunch of frauds who capitalize off of the ignorance and stupidity of mentally ill people. One line across the paper and ---VIOLA!--- instant masterpiece... give me a break. To think, these people actually have buildings for their worthless, no talent pieces of crap. I'm actually upset over this. Seriously. I'm looking at the self portrait of pablo picasso as I type and cant figure it out. My 4 year old brother could scribble something just like it. My teacher tells me to express my feelings as look at the paintings; but the only thing I ever feel like writing about after viewing a painting by one of these no talent artists is sorrow and disgust. If it were the intentions of all artists to piss the viewer of their paintings off, then mission a-frickin'-complished. I hate them all. When I look at these pictures, I dont see art. All I see are the words "You are a sucker"... Oh my GOD! For me, they actually JUMP OFF the page! Thats so amazing, let's pay them more for adding this amazing illusion! Oh, and to all you people who are thinking, "WOW! Another close minded child who just doesnt understand."(My teacher pulls this one all the time, he can go on for hours about the feelings and thoughts of every brush stroke. EVERY SINGLE ONE! Moron. Pain here! Sorrow there! but happiness over there. Just stop freak!) I happen to like art. REAL ART. Art that looks like someone actually put some effort into making. Deep down inside, you really want to admit that your favorite artists is at his enormous house, laughing at you. (referring to everyone who gave this book five stars and everyone who read them and agreed) You fools. DOWN WITH ART!

Rating: Summary: WOW Review: I just wanted to respond to the person before me. It sounds like contemporary art is way over your head. Please do not waist our time with long reviews about things you clearly do not understand.
Rating: Summary: Very insightful Review: Not only educational, but inspiring. I not only learned about each artist and what when on during their time of certain artworks, but I was able to get insdie their head. The words of the artist's in their letters were captivating. I was caught up in the reading. I especially enjoyed Matisse and Kandinsky. Kandinsky is very spiritual about his writing and gives a deep explanation of colors. Anyway, it is a great read. It was required for my history course, but I enjoyed it. Not very many in my class could understand what they were reading. I guess you not only need not just intellect, but sophistication. I liked it!
