Rating: Summary: Inspirational Review: I thought the book was very inspirational, with many many many examples of Carson's rule-breaking design. Definately a must own for those with a fresh and adventurous take on design. However, this book is not for designers who cling to 'the grid' like a baby blanket or those who tremble at the idea of pushing the limits of visual communication.
Rating: Summary: Beyond the boundries Review: If corporate america could only open up to the possibilities of this type of creativity and imagination...
Rating: Summary: This book is a study of commmposition. Review: If it weren't for the experimentations of David Carson, I would not be a graphic designer today. I'd probably be teaching painting somewhere hating life. The End of Print is a study in composition and type. Typography can be the most imaginative, illustrative aspect of a design, and Carson has brought this thinking to a generation of designers, myself included. People are starting to read again and he is one of the reasons, along with a hand ful of other designers who revolutionized the field in the late 80's and early 90's. Stale and stagnant is what design would be toda, I think that Carson is one of the pioneers of graphic design, and The End of Print should be used as an influence for anyone who considers graphic design as a career choice
Rating: Summary: Designers are so easily amazed dispite their dreamy eyes Review: My interest in this book began as simple curiousity about what exactly consitutes the "cutting edge" of design. After all it is all about David Carson's "Raygun" magazine design work and so forth.... and as we all know, and so many dreamy-eyed-wanna-be designers will tell you, our dear Mr. Carson is, in fact, THE GOD OF DESIGN.... so all bow before him... anyway, if this is the evidence, designers, even GODS, still have a long way to go to catch up to even the most mundane work conducted in the real art world. But, in fairness, it's a step in the right direction... a baby step... (but please remember that for the dreamy-eyed it's five stars all the way baby!... as for me, I'll give it two stars --- it's quite nice, but my eyes are swollen from being a jaded art snob)... peace
Rating: Summary: Pure Genius Review: This book inspired me to try new techniques with typography and is a must for any modern designer! The book contains a lot of David Carson's early work as well as some really great ads for Ray Gun Magazine. I definately recommend picking this one up just to view such innovative work!
Rating: Summary: i'm after, you, but he's before. Review: this book is a great reference of pre-modern computer graphics--in its infancy. showing us David Carson is one of the founders of computer graphic, being a prolific designer (yes he is). expressionism was the demolition ball that broke the barrier to freedom from the romantics and impressionist movement; to set art to another level of life (cubism, futurism, abstract art, etc.). i would say Carson's work is the same liberation from the bore of print and life in the digital world.the book is somewhat slow in the beginning and not UP-to-02/22/2004, but if you read this book with patience in actually getting to know Carson's retrospect. then you will enjoy the second half of this book. if your an art snob i don't recommend this book to you. eccentric ppl as yourself shouldn't even hold yourself as being honestly artistic. key word = honestly but if you are open, then step in and know the modern day Mattise of the graphic designers.
Rating: Summary: The best design of the decade Review: This book is essential for those who wants to work with design today. Even if you don't agree with Carson's work you have get this book. The book shows excellent work in full color pictures and in the end we have a interview with David Carson. Indispensable!
Rating: Summary: Designers easily amazed? Designers? Review: This was a trend changing book. The work that is actually (David Car5on) is from a time when the only thing happening...happened with the youth. Like today, the only progressive (read=good) design is coming from urban youth culture. Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Graffiti, HipHop, Rave...the list does go on and it wouldn't be a list if David Car5on didn't Design. This is a book demonstrating the need for a change in the normal graphic design world. Good read...Good reference...Unbreakable.
Rating: Summary: Must have for any serious designer Review: While many people consider David Carson's work far too "outrageous" for mainstream corporate design, his influence cannot be underestimated. This book will, if nothing else, inspire you to re-examine all the projects you have in-house. And, if you are like me, cause you to "push" the envelope" on your next project. I cannot recommend it highly enough
