Rating: Summary: Stunning Photographic Essay Review: Art Wolfe presents an absolutely stunning piece of work that captures much of wild Africa. While showing the usual shots of the Himba people, etc., this book presents views largely overlooked by other photographers like Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. Wolfe's photos show the glorious diversity of wildlife, of scenery, of nature. The panoramic views in this book are the closest I've seen to capturing how vast Africa really is. When you get there, you're stunned by how much larger everything is than you expected. This book captures that while showing savannas, deserts, snow-capped mountains, and views like nowhere else on earth. Even without the essays, this book is 5 solid stars. This work will look good on a living room coffee table, in your library, or just shared with your family. It somehow captures the magic we all used to experience reading National Geographic before decades of TV Specials dulled our senses to Nature's visuals. After seeing this book, my daughter announced that she wants to go to South Africa. I couldn't have asked for a greater gift than that.
Rating: Summary: Just plain stunning!!! Review: As an avid Art Wolfe fan, I bought this book expecting the typical magnificent photography that I have come to expect from this master!!! After buying "The Living Wild", I knew that this book would also feature the usual stunning work of Mr. Wolfe. Forget about this book as just a coffee table book..it goes way beyond the usual "coffee" books that you see. Not only does Mr. Wolfe provide us with superb images, he also provides us with the technical information about the many images made. As a dedicated Nikon user, I can appreciate his images being made mostly by Canon cameras...he simply shows what any great photographer knows..it is the person behind the camera that makes the images, not the camera!!. However, the technical information is quite nice!! Bravo, and heartily recommended!!!
Rating: Summary: Enthusiastically recommended for armchair travelers Review: Featuring a foreword by Jane Goodall of chimpanzee research fame, Africa: Photography is tremendous, spectacular display of truly lush, wondrous color photographs of natural wildlands and wildlife taken by Art Wolfe . A few pictures of African tribes people are also to be found amidst captures of lions, elephants, monkeys, pelicans, and so much more. Natural splendor abounds in this captivating gallery, and the highly informative text commentary adds depth and understanding to the many eye-catching images. With a foreword by Jane Goodall and an informative text by Michelle Gilders, Africa is enthusiastically recommended for armchair travelers, nature lovers, and anyone with an interest in the majestic splendor and majesty of the African wildlands.
Rating: Summary: Exquisite!! Review: I believe that the text I have just read is splendid, simply splendid!! It has wonderful photographs and a beautiful layout. I would certainly suggest a fine piece of literature such as this to anyone who wishes for a wonderful book to add to their home library. Again, splendid!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent photos of African wildlife and serengiti area Review: I spent about 50 days in africa, mostly in the eastern africa area. This book brings out the best landscape and wildlife pictures which is always difficult to see. The authoer must have spent months to capture the best of the nature and share it with readers. Excellent book if you are interested in the africal wildlife and scenery.
Rating: Summary: wow. amazing work. Review: This is one of my favorite photo books of all time. Very inspiring to me, as I lead 6 trips per year on photo safaris, teaching people how to photograph along the way. So this book hits home for me. I can definitely appreciate the nuances in his photos, as well as the time spent waiting for the shots. If you are looking for a wildlife / landscape / cultural book on Africa, this is a great place to start. I suspect there are many photos in this book that overlap with his 'Tribes' book, so that is my next book from Art.
Rating: Summary: Running with the Animals Review: This is positively one of the most amazing books I own. The photographs, color and clarity are remarkable -- Art Wolfe truly captures the spirit of Africa. As you flip through the pages, each image more stunning than the next, you begin to feel like you are IN Africa. A must for any safari adventurer, animal lover or anyone curious about the continent.
