Summary: A good investment!
Review: A friend of mine bought this book. She spoke highly of it. Then I had an opportunity to browse through it at my leisure. I found myself reading the whole thing, word-for-word, all 100 pages, in one sitting. I was inspired! I immediately began to employ Tom Lynch's lessons to my painting technique. This was yesterday. I need some practice, but I found that I really needed the inspiration of this book to loosen up. The flip-chart format appealed to me, as well as the pictorial demonstration style. I plan to purchase this book and use it as a ready reference in my studio.

Summary: Yesterday's homerun doesn't count in today's game.
Review: I agree with Verena Blackburn's review.
Many watercolorists teach workshops. Some merely demonstrate, painting a painting or 2 or 3, and lecture a little, at times the same old clues--you are supposed to learn by example but little else. On the other hand, some work at teaching as hard as they work at painting, and Tom Lynch is among the finest of these.
These 100 charts are for the intermediate-to-advanced watercolor painter. They are brief in explanation (particularly when it comes to Watercolor jargon), so it helps to know a lot of the common watercolor terminology. However, these charts represent the heart of Lynch's comprehensive teaching--he covers nearly everything--both with beautiful illustrations and reproduced paintings of his, which one can easily see accurately illustrate and clarify the text. But they are more than this. Lynch's design/composition/color approaches as well as techniques for rendering specific subject matter are insightful and often like revelations, the product of his many years of painting and teaching. He is able to capture in a few words art wisdom in a way I have not frequently found (I have about 80-90 watercolor painting books). It's obvious that Lynch has thought through and used successfully many times the techniques he captures in the charts. And, he has a way of communicating to you what you need to know to be successful. These charts contain, in concise form, watercolor knowledge that would probably take many of us years to acquire on our own.
Years ago (15 at least), I watched a number of Lynch's teaching presentations on public television (I also bought one of his first instructional books), and those few lessons did more for my understanding of watercolor and painting success than most workshops I have attended. They gave me what you might call a "quantum leap." These charts contain more. Honestly, I would have paid 10 times their retail price to own them, by the way.
One final word, if you buy these charts, it would be good to also buy his book "Watercolor Secrets," which covers some of the same points but also provides more text and explanations than the charts do. This would especially be wise if you are closer to the beginner end of the intermediate range.

Review: I have Tom's other books and think they are excellent. I find this one to be of no use at all.

Review: The format of this publication is very helpful and makes the book easier to read. I took the work shop and the book closely follows the design of the workshop.

Summary: I Was Mislead By The Title
Review: There is a difference between an artist and an art instructor. Tom Lynch has the rare gift of being able to get the information inside YOUR head so you can use it. Five years ago, I attended one of his live workshops in Pasadena--it was phenomenal--and he had set up on tables a sea of instructional charts on specific topics. I frantically tried to write down how to paint rocks, layers, trees, figures, waves, . . . until I begged him for help in getting this wealth of information down, and he said, "There's a book coming out!" Well, I'm thrilled that it's here, and all artists will be too. Each page is a complete, specific lesson that simplifies so that anyone can do it. Concrete principles, specific methods, fabulous results. Yet these are the foundation only, and you will be ready to use them in your own style, with color and creativity, and nail it every time. Great format with a flip chart on a self easel, gorgeous color, clear instruction. I have books by many different artists, but this is the best of the best. GET THIS BOOK!

Summary: I Was Mislead By The Title
Review: What a disappointment.
Yes, Mr. Lynch knows his craft, but this is not a beginner book by any means.
I feel mislead by the title because even from Lesson One, these aren't lessons but rather his little observations on what 'art' is, and how to 'think like an artist' but then he says, 'don't think'...It's confusing.
And I'm stuck with this book now and can't return it since I live in Europe, and had my mom send it over to me.
Maybe live at his workshops one can get more out of his teachings but unfortunately this book isn't it.
