Rating: Summary: Rene Burri Photographs Review: This large-scale retrospective, written and compiled by Koetzle (editor in chief, Leica World) and strikingly designed by Swiss graphic designer Wener Jeker, documents the life and work of Magnum photographer Ren‚ Burri (b. 1933). Burri, whose artistic pursuits began in Switzerland as a student, was mentored by greats like Hans Finsler, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Werner Bischof. He would go on to publish works in magazines (Paris Match, Life, etc.) and in full-length monographs on such subjects as postwar Germany, Le Corbusier, the gauchos, and, perhaps most famously, Che Guevara. Though not the first book on this photographer, this is the lengthiest treatment to date, documenting a 50-year photojournalistic career with more than 400 duotone images. Together with Burri, Koetzle has unearthed the famous and the rare from Burri's archive, which resuls in a commingling of the tragic, the ordinary, and the celebrity in 21 geographically oriented chapters. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries collecting in the history of photography or photojournalism
