Rating: Summary: She gets on your nerves! Review: The author managed to flaw a almost-perfect book by being so obnoxiously annoying. The book is excellent in all but one aspect: the author constantlytells you not to be a wimp and talking to you down from her (unreachable) pedestal. That cost her the 5th star.On the other hand, she completely knocked my socks off by condensing most of graphic design's principles in a few, very clear and straight-foward concepts: the CRAP principle (even the acronym is memorable!). If you're a newbie to graphic design, or even if you're a seasoned artist, this is a great book. I only recommend you don't forget your Prozac... Albeit what was said above, I didn't hesitate to buy her other book, 'The Non-Designer's Type Book' If you're confident in your learning skills, I recommend Roger C. Parker's 'One Minute Manager', although not as mnemonically-centered, much more thorough and brilliant.
Rating: Summary: Very useful: clear, concise and centered Review: I'm a newbie in the design neighbourhood. I found this book to be very enlighting. It sticks to the point all the time. It explains a few concepts, but those concepts are well chosen and clearly explained, from the basic principles of arranging elements on a piece of work to how to choose the right fonts. The book is also useful for teachers since it provides many engaging exercises.
Rating: Summary: Gets right to the heart of good design. Novice-intermediate Review: This is an easy to understand book appropriate for novice or itermediate design professionals. She boils down good design into some simple rules. Some reviewers thought she talked down to the reader. I disagree.
Rating: Summary: Top of the List for Design Books Review: I have been developing user interfaces for 18 years from successful computer games to business applications. I read this book several years ago and it is now at the top of my list for anyone starting in UI design work. Its memorable Joshua Tree principle and C.R.A.P. acronym have stuck with me. Anyone doing anything visual on paper or screen should have this book in their library. Thank you Robin for a great contribution to the field!
Rating: Summary: The Non-Designer's Design Book Review: Great book. Easy to read and understand. No more amateur looking Designs from me.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Little Book! Review: Buy this book! I have several design books that cost 4 or 5 times the price of this one--THIS ONE IS BETTER BY FAR! Robin Williams simplifies the secrets of excellent design in such a manner that you will IMMEDIATELY be able to improve your designs. Whether you're making business cards, a flyer, brochure, advertisement--this book is a MUST HAVE. I've never seen anything so simple do so much. This answered all my questions and explained exactly why some designs "just don't work" and other "got it." If you don't have the time for professional training (even if you do!)--get this book. I guarantee you'll learn FAST. I went through the whole book in about two hours. It will be my companion forever! Thanks Robin Williams!
Rating: Summary: You can really learn it here fast Review: I never learned so much from a book. I immediately re-designed some stuff that we have on hold right now and it looks so much better now. I don't need anything else.
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: This book has become one of my standard desktop references, and something I've recommended to friends and students. It's a bargain!
Rating: Summary: Fabulously Helpful Overview Review: I know next to nothing about design and was able to quickly and easily learn the basics with this book. It's designed so that I could see the results of rules applied and easily read the book in one sitting or several. Not for someone with a lot of design background, but for those of us that need help in understanding why certain things do and don't work. I find myself applying many of the rules whenever I design ads or websites. For me, this book was a great place to start.
Rating: Summary: Essential for Most People Review: I lend a copy of this book to all of our employees. The vast majority of people out there have absolutely no design sense. Once employees understand and follow the simple guidelines laid out in this book, everything the give, from an Excel spreadsheet to a business proposal. looks better and is easier to read and understand. Invaluable.
