Rating: Summary: one of the best Review: this is a great movie and in the days of big budget action movies that are all copy cats this is a nice change of pace. Selleck was perfect for the role and i think should get an award for his acting. if you like westerns even a little then tune into this one, or if you don't then maybe this will make a fan of them. The extras on the disk are a making of feature and one trailer from the cinema and two for TV, but for the price it;s just right. Also you buy the dvd for the movie not the extras.
Rating: Summary: A Western John Wayne Would Have Loved Review: Matthew Quigley is an American sharpshooter hired by an Australian cattle baron, Marston, to help him get rid of an infestation. Quigley, with his custom-made, experimental rifle and ammunition, and an uncanny ability to hit whatever he aims at, no matter how far away, goes to western Australia and finds out that the infestation is not of dingoes, as he had believed, but of pesky Aborigines. Quigley is repulsed by the idea of exterminating people like vermin, and turns against Marston. The feud between the two takes several twists before culminating in a showdown. Along the way, Quigley becomes the protector and companion of an American woman deranged by guilt over accidentally killing her own child. The two get thrown into the desert, hunted by Marston's men, hunted by dingoes, rescued by Aborigines, and sponsored by a nearby (as Australians measure it) town. The viewer also gets an interesting look at Aborigine culture along the way. Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley. This might be Selleck's best performance. He is stoic, soft-spoken, gentlemanly, and as stubbornly strong in his beliefs and values as John Wayne ever was. Laura San Giacomo gives a wonderful performance as the semi-deranged woman, who is simultaneously fleeing her past and unable to escape it. This is probably her best acting performance as well. Alan Rickman (Severus Snape of the Harry Potter films) is exquisitely evil and, at the same time, almost pathetic, as the snide, sneering, and domineering land/cattle baron, Marston, who idolizes and idealizes the American West and is so insecure that he cannot handle anyone disagreeing with him. The scenery is stunning, and the cinematography reminds me of "True Grit" where the struggles between men are juxtaposed against the vast, harsh, and stunning beauty of the Australian Outback. The music is truly stirring, and also reminds me of "True Grit". There are no slow spots in the story, although there are quieter interludes. Warning: There is considerable violence and brutality in this film. It pulls no punches in showing the evil of Marston and the extremes that Quigley must use to oppose Marston. This is an excellent (very) Western for adults, with some complexity and thinking thrown in. It gives Americans a chance to look at racism from a different perspective. I'm surprised sequels were not made (e.g., "Quigley in China", "Quigley in Brazil"), and hope that happens someday soon.
Rating: Summary: a Top 10 movie Review: This is one of those films which I can watch again and again. It is a straight foreward tale of adventure, with few twists and turns, but with interesting characters, a great rifle, a sense of morality thrown in, and a whole lot of fun. Tom Selleck was born to play Quigley, and should immediately film a sequel. I bet they will be surprised how well this DVD sells. The best recommendation I can give is this: It is one of those 10 films which I would take to the proverbial desert Island. If you liked The Postman,(yes, THAT Postman), Citizen Kane, The Graduate, Contact, Toy Story, U-571, Casablanca, Jaws, you will probably like this one.

Rating: Summary: Tom Selleck's Best Movie Review: Tom Selleck and Laura San Giacomo star in this western filmed in Austraila, where they must outwit a land baron (Alan Rickman in a cleaver performance) who wants to wipe out the native peoples on his ranchland. Something Tom Selleck will not stand by and watch, so he gives him and his henchman a big run for their money with guns blazeing. A very good western.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Example of the Genre Review: If you like your heroes to be real men, yet sensitive; to be super men, but human; to be believable in unbelievable ways, then this is a film you will enjoy over and over again. Tom Selleck is special in this role. The filming borders on spectacular; the plot is less exceptional, yet very easy to buy into. The characters are two-dimensional, yet so likable (or dispicable) that you never think twice about their lack of depth. This is not a "great film" but it is an excellent flick. Anyone with a heart and a hankering for black-and-white issues and answers, will be greatly satisfied with this movie. If you want Cannes Film Festival sort of stuff, don't bother; if, however, you never much cared for that Australian cowboy of the 80's who's now making a living selling Subaru Outbacks and want to see AN AMERICAN turn the tables in Australia...this is IT. Rent it or buy it...it's worth your time.
Rating: Summary: Quigley Down Under Review: Quigley Down Under is absolutely the most exciting, beautiful, and breathtaking Western I have ever seen. John Wayne would have stood up and cheered for Mr. Sellecks portrayal of Mathew Quigley. From the beginning of the movie, Mr. Selleck brings Quigley across of a man of strenght, with a heart as big as his Sharp rifle. Alan Rickman, as Ellot Marston, is, as always, the man you love to hate. Laura San Giacomo, as Crazy Cora, makes your heart go out to her thoughout the movie, and makes you understand just why Quigley's heart was hers for the taking. This movie has it all, from the beautiful scenery, to the exciting shootouts, you'll find yourself laughing, crying, and most of all feeling you've just seen the best movie ever. The chemistry between Mr. Selleck and Ms. San Giacomo is perhaps the best ever, those two should definately work together again. This is one that should have a Part II. See It.......Now.
Rating: Summary: a fun score with some surprising emotion! Review: Quigley Down Under is a great film and the score is nothing else but maravelous. It starts out fun then goes action driven. Then a cut like Cora's story comes along and really suprises you with its emotion and depth the same goes with the gift. it is a score that will get stuck in your head...but you really don't mind!
Rating: Summary: Best cowboy movie ever was filmed in Australia! Review: I love the movie old fashioned good vs. evil combined with modern acting and special effects. This movie generated a shooting sub-culture including a Quigley Down Under shootout every year in Montana. I bought the VHS, laserdisk and I am waiting for the DVD. I bouth also a copy of the rifle from Shiloh Rifle Company in Montana (4 years waiting list). I can not make those shots though! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
