Review: Starring a Sharp's rifle and co-starring Tom Selleck, this is one of my favorite all-time westerns. I had been waiting for the DVD version of the film ever since I purcgased a DVD player. It's been a long wait, but worth it.Crank up the surround sound and enjoy the booming .45-120 rounds reverberating about the room. The sound quality is much better than my VHS version. The letter box format and inproved picture quality really enhance the cinematography of the Australian landscape. It's a western in the classic mold, the good guy, the villian, and the girl all set in a landscape bigger than life. It's a modern classic much like past John Ford films. I really wished they had made a prequel of this film. It would have mad for an interesting story of how Quigley came by his rifle and his skill. For western fans, this is a must have.

Summary: Bigger Bullets, Bigger Holes!
Review: "And the award for 'best portrayal of a crazy woman' goes to ... ". Well played characterizations, excellent cinematography, and a little magic make this a fun movie for all. Yes, the plot has holes in it big enough you can see them from 900 yards off, and yes, the "We're superior to the rest of the world (Yanks vs. Aussies and Redcoats)" attitude is embarrasingly obvious. Inspite of this cavalier atmoshpere and the near total disregard to historical accuracy, I really enjoy this film and recommend it to just about anybody ... unless of course you are from DownUnder or from Across the Pond.

Summary: Screen too wide
Review: This movie itself is good in VHS but the DVD super wide scren 2.35 aspect ratio makes the picture on my TV screen narrow and only fills half the screen. Had I known I would have stuck with the VHS version.

Summary: Spaghetti Western meets Magnum P.I.
Review: Take the crazy "terrorist" from Die Hard, mix in a half crazy chick, then stir with Thomas Magnum. The result is a western that does not take itself too seriously (although it has plenty of serious moments). It's a rifleman for hire called to Australia to kill the natives storyline. He goes native, and avenges the Auzzies. Fun to watch. Plenty of surprises.

Review: It is unbelievable that Amazon mentions Alan Rickman as the star of this movie and DOESN'T EVEN MENTION TOM SELLECK! This is Selleck's best performance and it is a great story. Rickman, as always, is also great, but not the star.

Summary: DVD Review
Review: The DVD release sports an excellent transfer that hides the age of the movie itself. Not perfect, but the best you will ever see for this film. The Dolby 2 channel track bears out well and is downright entertaining all by itself. Not much by the way of extras, but if you are a Western fan, a Tom Selleck fan (this is his finest work), a fan of historical fiction (aka - the treatment of aboriginals by both the British and Australian governments) then this DVD will be a welcome addition to your collection.

Review: A boring and unrealistic film about Tom Selleck's character being brought in to shoot aborigines to clear them off a station.
It incorrectly shows aborigines in large tribes.
This may be true of American Indians but this is a different culture and the idea of whites willy nilly doing this is offensive and racist as well as historically false.

Summary: A Quigley fan since it was first released
Review: Tom Selleck is outstanding as the American cowboy hired by Alan Rickman to come to Australia to help him with his aboriginal problems. Women will fall in love with Selleck's cool, tough, protective, and caring portrayal of Matthew Quigley. Men will want to be him. Rickman is a natural bad guy. Laura San Giacomo does the best acting of her life as Cora. I saw this movie when it was first released to VHS in the late 1980's. The day I returned the copy I'd rented, I bought a copy to keep. I have been recommending this movie ever since. One of my all time favorite movies. I hope that with its release to DVD it will get renewed interest and finally get the attention it deserves.
