Summary: What took you so long?
Review: Another film I have been patiently waiting for on DVD. This is a great ensemble piece and probably my favorite Dustin Hoffman movie. Totally funny!!!

Summary: "Little Big Man was either the Most Neglected Hero
Review: in history or a Liar of Insane Proportions!"

This is Dustin Hoffman's tour de force; his transformation from a young man into a very, very old one, and it is entirely believable and great to watch. All the cast members are terrific, and Jeff Corey and Robert Mulligan my favorites. When Hoffman joins Custer's 7th as a scout/mule skinner he deliberately gives Custer the information that causes him to make the ill-fated decision to ride into the waiting arms of several thousand Sioux/Cheyenne and consequently, history. His own scout, the Native American named White Man Runs Him, warned him on the day before the Battle: "Tomorrow we go home by a different path."

Interesting note:

"One of the facts surrounding the battle that has been largely overlooked is that it wasn't just Bluecoats against Indians. It was Indians against Indians. Without the Crow and Arikara scouts aiding the military, the Bluecoats would not even have been able to find the Sioux and Cheyenne. On June 17, when Crazy Horse and his warriors attacked General Crook's detachment at the Battle of the Rosebud, the battle favored the Sioux, although Crook called it a draw. He withdrew from the field to lick his wounds, taking himself out of the hunt for the ''hostiles,'' and neither Gibbon and his men, Terry and his men, nor Custer and his men knew that he had returned to base. But this is the real kicker about that battle: the Crow and Arikera scouts saved General Crook and his men from an even more absolute whipping.

This, and other poignant details, are explored in a new book, ''Little Bighorn Remembered,'' by Herman J. Viola. He is the Curator Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution and noted author of fifteen books on American Indians over the past quarter century. He is now the adopted brother of Joseph Medicine Crow, whose grandfather White Man Runs Him was a scout for Custer, helping him to find the large gathering of Sioux and Cheyenne at the Little Big Horn."

The most haunting part of the entire movie, for me, was the massacre of Native Americans as a result of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. When the 7th rides into the camp they are accompanied by the stirring tune of "Garryowens" and slaughter men, women and children in one astounding, riveting scene, that horrifies and hypnotizes. You know it actually happened, it is historical and that makes it have far more impact, and it is very hard to watch, yet impossible not to.
All the Native Americans portrayed are done so with great care and I liked the friend of Hoffman's who later became a "Contrary" and walked backwards and spoke backwards, and the one who was more female than male and allowed, quite generously and without prejudice of any kind, to remain with the women and children, and to dress like a woman.
The elephant spigot in the drugstore was great, (that Old Lodge Skins saw in a dream) as was Faye Dunaway's portrayal of the good Christian wife with a side of lust.
When Custer loses it on the Battlefield, it is something to see, and he literally goes insane in front of us. In accounts of the actual battle, there were reports of soldiers going insane and killing themselves first before the Sioux could get to them; not a bad idea, considering the way in which they were butchered. Another interesting factoid was that the battle itself took about twenty minutes, and was not the long, drawn out episode sometimes portrayed. An old Sioux watched from afar, and said the battle lasted as long as it took him to finish his pipe. There were mutilations too, and Custer was the only one relatively untouched; when the squaws came to the battlefield they pierced his ears so in the next life he would "hear better, for he had been warned not to attack the Sioux again."
All in all, a wonderful movie and really transports you to a another time, long gone.

Summary: Little Big Man DVD superb quality
Review: Though no extra's the quality of the image and sound of this DVD is absolute great. This film is 33 years old but you can't see it.I wish many other older films get such a beautiful DVD transfer. For instance Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch deserves much better! Great watch.

Summary: THE OLD WEST LIVES
Review: An excellent fictional picture of the trials and tribulations of an old man from childhood until he is and old man of 121. How he was raised by Cheyenne Indians, his entry back into the white world and various stages of his life including Custer's Last Stand. Great movie rent it buy it or wait for it to be the movie of the week on TV

Summary: This 5 star rating is for the movie itself, NOT for the DVD.
Review: "Little Big Man" is great. It delivers an important message without seeming to, and that's always admirable in any movie. It's also one of the few movies I can stand Dustin Hoffman in. But, the five star rating I've given is for the movie itself, not the DVD. As per usual, Paramount has botched another long-awaited DVD release (look up "Major League" on Amazon). I just saw the back cover for this DVD on another site..... NO special features whatsoever. No documentaries (which is really a crime, given the subject matter and the elaborate production design), no commentary, not even the usual measly trailer!! I really wish Fox had held on to the rights to this film, at least they would have done it SOME justice. I'm a big-time fan of Paramount films, but I wish the folks in charge of DVD releases would get their freakin' acts together.

Summary: Digging Bear's Review
Review: A masterpiece of American cinema, pure and simple. There is no person before or since that has portrayed General George Armstrong Custer better than Richard Mulligan in this film. Dustin Hoffman gives a truly wonderful performance as Jack Crabb all the way from boyhood to an aged man of one hundred and twenty one years old. The makeup done on Mr. Hoffman for the old man scenes is incredible. You can hardly tell that it's Dustin Hoffman under it. All the Indian actors are real American Indians and the movie is so much the better for it. The man playing Little Big Man's father, who is a fine actor seen in many a western movie, should have been nominated for an Oscar for this as I do believe Richard Mulligan was. The movie can seem long at some points but as soon as you would begin to notice you yanked quickly back into another engaging predicament Mr. Crabb has gotten himself in. One of my favorites is when he becomes a gun slinger with the outragous outfit to go along with the attitude. But when he meets up with Wild Bill Hickock and sees his first dead man, he quickly changes profession. The climax of Little Big Man is probably one of greatest moments in cinema. Jack Crabb is an Indian scout for General Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. It does not get any better and is a must see.

Oh, and Faye Dunaway gives an erotic seduction performance that gives me goose pimples every time I see it.

Summary: Little Big Man
Review: The DVD is not out yet, But I can't wait. This is a truely great tragicomedy rich with poignant irony. Chief Dan George and Dustin Hoffman are outstanding! The historical references are accurate, which in no way interferes with it's being a fantastically entertaining story. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will love it.

Review: Little Big Man the classics of classics. Dustin Hoffman plays so many different characters in this movie and does a supperb job. What I didn't get is when Dustin Hoffman was about to recieve his Oscar for Kramer verses Kramer, his introduction mentioned all of his previous movies and the only one they didn't mention was "LITTLE BIG MAN". Maybe it was a legal thing, I don't know, but if you want to watch a good movie the way movies were meant to be made, Little Big Man is a movie to watch over and over..You have to own this one. Enjoy it with the family. It is a good day to die.(Chief Dan George) I'm happy it is finally out on DVD.. I'll get my Christmas shopping done early this year.

Summary: One of the most enjoyable movies of all time
Review: I can think of no movie that transports me back to the Wild West more than "Little Big Man". Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of the winsome Jack Crabb is dead-on. Come along with him on his amazing journey as he ping-pongs between the worlds of the white man and the human beings. This is a movie that has been crying out for a DVD release for years, and now it's finally here. Can't wait to get on board.
