Summary: A Straight Shooting Rendition
Review: I consider this the best rendition of the O.K. Corral gunfight. It's highly visually accurate, western buffs will spot a lot of attention to detail. The movie manages to capture the extraordinary circumstances of Wyatt Earp while not mythologizing him. There are top notch performances by all the major players, Val Kilmer may even partially steal the movie as 'Doc' Holliday. Although the movie greatly telescopes time you still retain the sense of the steadily building tensions which led to the famous confrontation. Of all the OK Corral movies this is the only one where the two main actors are close to the ages of Earp and Holliday and the only one where Doc Holliday's Southern manner and background are displayed.

Summary: Superb!
Review: The best western of the decade put Russell and Kilmer on the top of the performance list. Who new that they could act this way! However you can not acknowledge just these two guys and let the others slip by. The suporting cast is one of the best I have ever seen. That is rare when you get two big name actors. Also look for Harry Carey Jr, as one the Tombstone law men. George P. Cosmatos actually made a good film and did a good job directing it! This film is among the 10 best of the decade! Grade:A

Summary: Tombstone Blazes New Trails
Review: There have been many filmings of the Wyatt Earp saga, most done well. John Ford with his excellent "My Darling Clementine," two John Sturges films, "Gunfight at OK Corral," and "Hour of the Gun." Both excellent and hold up well. And along comes "Tombstone," not as heralded as versions that came before, but what a brilliant piece of movie-making. There has not been many westerns made recently and they used to be the staple of the screen. "Tomestone" injects new life into this time-worn story. Kurt Russell is a tower of strength as Wyatt Earp. His brothers are well played by Sam Elliot as brother Virgil and Bill Paxton as brother Morgan. The rest of the cast are finely cast and good in their roles. But the role that really galvanizes this movie to real greatness is Doc Holliday played by Val Kilmer. He totally inhabits the character, giving his many lines funny twists, like "I'm you're huckleberry," or "You're no daisy," all spoken in a prissy, hilarious Georgian accent, yet there is an underlining sadness about him-no mean feat with such a character. The action is furious, tragic and rousing. The photography by co-producer William Fraker is superb, with thunderstorms, swirling dust and wide distant Arizona vistas. After seening the overlong, slow "Wyatt Earp," basically going over the same themes, but with little spark, made me appreciate "Tombstone" all the more. Kudos to the the costume and set designers for a original, realistic look to the production. And one last kudo to Kevin Jarre for his wonderful, funny, screenplay. Scenes like Johnny Ringo (Michael Bien) and Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) dueling in Latin, then that great western icon, Harry Caray Jr. breaking in and saying "Boys, we don't want any trouble in any language." And pre "Sling Blade" Billy Bob Thornton being slapped and threatens to draw his gun on an unarmed Wyatt Earp and Wyatt says "Go on, skin those smoke wagons and see what happens." "Tombstone" evokes the time, the flawed people of the wild west, shows great attention to details and is a positively kinetic piece of movie making that makes the heart beat faster, entertains, and leaves us with the sadness of a west long gone, even if it is a west of legend, violent and confusing. How many films on video can claim so many strengths? That Tombstone won no awards is incredible. This movie was clearly one of the best if not the best movie of the year.

Summary: If Kilmer were the only star, the movie would rate 5!
Review: I, along with many others, think that Val's performance was worthy of an Oscar. His was the only redeeming character in this film. Kurt "I Love a good Disney flick" Russel was, as always, totally overacting. Val stole the show! He not only had the best lines, but was more convincing in his performance than any "Doc Holliday" I have witnessed. Yes, I have witnessed them all! It is a total shame that Val did not take home an Oscar for this film, and even more of a blunder, that he was not even nominated. But, those Hollywood people, what do they know about acting!

Review: This was an awesome movie. It totally went along with what happened in real life. Kurt Russell(Wyatt Earp) did an excellent job, as did Bill Paxton(Morgan Earp) and Sam Elliot(Virgil Earp). But I believe the best actor in this movie was Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. He plays the character so well and gets in the swing of things so quickly. Whomever casted this movie did an excellent job and the movie shows it!

Summary: Worthwhile Viewing
Review: There have been several movies centered on the famous "Gunfight at the OK Corral." I have seen at least six over the years. Tombstone is probably the best of them other than John Ford's classic "My Darling Clementine," which remains in a class of its own.

The central roles in any OK Corral movie are always Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday is the finest I have ever seen on screen. Kurt Russell plays Wyatt Earp. His performance will never erase memories of Henry Fonda, but it is solid. Russell captures some of the moral ambiguity of the real Wyatt Earp.

The supporting cast is very good, led by a magnificent performance by Sam Elliott as Virgil Earp. Also noteworthy are Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn as the Earp's foes, Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo, and Dana Delany as Josie Marcus, Wyatt's love interest. Western buffs will also want to watch for veteran Dobie Carey in a small role.

Tombstone is also a visually beautiful movie--some of the cinematography is spectacular.

The one weak part of the film is the final segment (about the last 20 minutes or so), which degenerates into a montage of gunfight scenes where it is nearly impossible to keep track of what is going on or who's just killed who. But overall, Tombstone is a very fine Western.

Summary: A Stylish Action/Western
Review: This action packed western is sure to please western movie buffs. Be prepared for the exceedingly overblown violence in this movie, though (a big plus sometimes!). This film features memorable performances by Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer.

Summary: THIS ONES A DAISY
Review: Out of all the westerns i've ever seen, and in all movies in general, Tombstone is by very, very far one of the best movies i've ever seen. Its in my top 5 at least. This movie is a classic right from the beginning, and there's no big action scene either, it's just a warm, relaxing presence. Kurt Russell as Wyatt, a modest, romantic, softspoken gentleman who fears absolutely no man, is fantastic in this, the best role of his career. And that goes for Val Kilmer, who portrays Doc Holiday, a drunken, charismatic, gambling dentist whose reputation as THE deadliest gunslinger precedes him and a man riddle with TB. The two actors make an undeniably, unbreakable bond for the charaters on the screen. Bill Paxton and Sam Elliot play Wyatt's younger and older brothers, Morgan and Virgil, they eventually get caught up in Tombstone's town politics later on in the film. The sceens with Wyatt are great, almost challenging, as he out wits and stares down almost all who steps in his way. But the classic, the instantly classic sceens are with Doc Holiday, who is just to damn clever and sarcastic for his own good, making enemies with just about everyone who stands up in front of him. The story deepens and becomes more involved the longer Wyatt and Co. stay in Tombstone. The rival gang called the Cowboys more or less run the town, and the county sheriff is on the take with them. Lots of blood shed, shoot outs, romance, and an unbelievable ending are all in store for you. I don't want to explain anymore about it, but i gaurantee you'll love it. If you like Westerns or action movies this is right up your O.K. Corralley

Summary: Superb!
Review: I'm not a fan of westerns at all, I've never liked them. However, "Tombstone" is one of my favorite movies. I can't even begin to comment on the excellent performance that Val Kilmer gives, it's almost too perfect. And even besides Kilmer, I've never seen Kurt Russell give a better performance; not to mention the vast array of other acting talent in this movie. This is an absolute must-see movie. It's excellent.
