Summary: It isn't Halloween until the Simpsons say so!
Review: The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" is a Halloween staple. It is the highlight of my Halloween celebration. I look forward to the new edition each year, and I cherish the past episodes. So, naturally, I'm happy that this collection has been made available. (I bought two copies: one for me, and a present for my friend.) This compilation includes four episodes. Each episode contains three mini-episodes:

Treehouse of Horror V
"The Shinning," a tribute to the horror classic. "Time and Punishment," where Homer time travels via a toaster. "Nightmare Cafeteria," where school staff perfects the art of serving the student body.

Treehouse of Horror VI
"Attack of the 50 Foot Eyesores," where advertisements have their revenge. "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace" finds Groundskeeper Willie as a Freddie-type. "Homer3" has Homer visiting the mysterious third dimension.

Treehouse of Horror VII
"The Thing and I" introduces us to Bart's long lost evil twin. "The Genesis Tub" casts Lisa as a creator of a tiny little world. "Mr. Kang Goes to Washington" has aliens taking on the form of Bob Dole and Bill Clinton, just in time for elections!

Treehouse of Horror XII
"Hex and the City" has a gypsy cursing Homer and everyone he loves. "House of Whacks" puts the Simpsons in a computerized home. "Wiz Kids" is a tribute to the first Harry Potter movie.

As others have noted, the setup page of this DVD package is very slow. Actually, it takes about three seconds for the selection to take place. So, it's not that slow really, just in comparison to what we're used to with DVDs. But something that I think makes it worth the few seconds wait is the fact that many scenes that have been deleted from the syndication versions of these episodes have been restored for this DVD compilation. Though most scenes that were edited out are only a few seconds long, there are some episodes that apparently had several little bits taken out for the syndication airings. These little seconds add another dimension to the episodes that we have been missing since their original primetime debut; it makes them more complete and rounds out the story. My favorite deleted scene occurs during "Attack of the 50 Foot Eyesores" where Otto is driving children down the street in the school bus. He sees a huge billboard advertisement walking down the road. "Whoa! This is an intense acid flashback!" he says.

Summary: TOH is not an accurate representation of The Simpsons
Review: In response to a below review by a person who has never seen The Simpsons, but yet bases their entire take on the series on this one DVD, that's not fair at all. Treehouse of Horror does not follow the storyline of the show - they are little one act parodies of horror movies that come around Halloween each year. Parents with small children should be smart enough not to show their kids something with "Horror" in the title. It is not fair to judge an entire series on a DVD of selected alternate-universe storylines. The humor on the Simpsons in the good years was far from crude - see Mr. Plow or Marge vs. the Monorail.
As for this DVD set, it's just a random sampling thrown together to make money for the holidays. Save your money and buy a boxed set.

Summary: Correction to Simpsons comments...
Review: A correction here, from the "first time Simson viewer". My daughters informed me that it is NOT Bart who does the axe murder in one episode on this DVD. Rather, it is HOMER who goes nuts and chops another character to death. There, I stand corrected. Whew! All else the same, though.

Summary: Give us more!
Review: Since first airing, the Halloween Specials (aka Treehouse of Horror) have been some of the most imaginative and satirical of Simpsons episodes. It's a shame that this is not a double disc collection of ALL Halloween Specials to date but the 4 presented here are definitely some of the best.

First up is Treehouse of Horror 1 (1991) and, like Bart says about Friday the 13th part 1, it's pretty tame by today's standards. Second is Treehouse of Horror V (1995) which is my fave because it contains Homer 3, the episode in which Homer falls into the 3rd dimension and finally into the real world. Third is Treehouse of Horror VI (1996) in which the earth is enslaved by Kang and Kodos (posing as presidential candidates Clin-ton and Bob Dole). Lastly is Treehouse of Horror XI containing a fabulous Harry Potter spoof and the voice of Pierce Brosnan as a house who takes a shine to Marge.

The DVD is in 1.33:1, as drawn and is in Dolby 2.0 surround. The only extra is a short clip highlighting Kang and Kodos best moments. It would be cool of Fox to release a few more of these Halloween sets as only a third of the Halloween Specials are featured here, sadly the one where Freddy and Jason are sitting on their sofa at the beginning is not one of them. Still, it's definitely worth picking up.

Summary: Not Enough Treehouse of Horror Episodes!
Review: I like The Simpsons so when I saw this Tree House of Horror DVD I bought it because I like the Halloween stories and I wanted the Tree House of Horror episodes because I don't know if I really want to buy every complete season DVDs for The Simpsons. Some of my favorite Halloween stories are on this DVD, The Shinning, Time and Punishment, Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace, etc. I'm disappointed that they only included Tree House of Horrors 5, 6 and 7 and skipped to 12. What happened to Tree House of Horrors 8, 9, 10 and 11? And They should have also included Tree House of Horrors 1, 2 3, and 4. The bonus feature with Kang and Kodos was just stupid clips taken from previous Kang and Kodos segments and was useless and the DVD is rather sparse and wasn't put together very good! I hope Fox eventually puts out a better Halloween DVD boxset that includes all of the Tree House of Horror episodes and gives us bonus feaures that aren't stupid and useless!

Summary: Not as well-done as the Season Releases, but...
Review: Okay what we have here are 4 Treehouse of Horror Simpsons episodes (5,6,7, and 12). There are no commentaries or special features other than a 3 1/2 minutes of Kang and "my sister" Kodos clips. The episodes are funny, and they all look great on DVD. You get the spoof of THE SHINING and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET along with many of the Sci Fi themed ones like the 2001 spoof with Pierce Brosnan as the evil in love with Marge home computer. You could wait for these on the season releases, but these come from season 6,7,8 and 13! I don't think FOX will stop releasing SIMPSONS on DVD sets, but the slow pace is from the creators who want each set to be chock full of extras and commentaries. So it could be a few years before they even get around to season 6. They are some of the wackiest episodes! And the price is pretty reasonable. So I say enjoy!
