Summary: Beautiful and engaging!
Review: Horatio Hornblower is a beautiful period piece, set in a very romantic time. It's a delight to watch! The stories pull you right in, and it doesn't take long to care about the characters. These are the kind of movies I can watch over and over again and never tire of.

The DVD also makes great use of the medium and provides an extra goodie in each volume!

Summary: Ioan, you're so talented!
Review: Horatio Hornblower has become my new favorite movie. It was simply amazing! The acting by Ioan Gruffudd, (Horatio) and Jamie Bamber (Archie Kennedy) was THE BEST that I've ever seen. Ioan has become my new favorite actor, and I plan to see every movie that he's been in and shall be in. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone! My very best friend's fave movie is the Matrix. (She has completely different interests than I do) and I begged her to watch Horatio Hornblower with me. Reluctantly, she did. She loves it too! I'm telling you, anyone, no matter what kind of movies you like to watch, comedy, drama, war, romance, Horatio Hornblower's got it all. I'm positive you'll love it. And Ioan Gruffudd is the best actor. He plays the shy innocence of Horatio perfectly, along with the heroism, the bravery and the talent. It all fits in together. No wonder they won the Emmy Award for Best Miniseries!

Summary: Hornblower rules the DVD player
Review: This series made for A&E is one of the best series to come down the pike in years. The only exposure we had to Hornblower on film prior to this was Captain Horatio Hornblower with Gregory Peck in 1951. While granted this is a great film, this A&E series is even better becuase it goes into 4 stories from "Young Hornblower". The Duel coming from The Even Chance, The Fire Ships aka The Exam for Lieutenant, The Duchess and the Devil, same and The Wrong War aka Frogs and Lobsters. The DVD copy is the best way to go (Amazon even sells it for less than the VHS) because it includes the documentary A&E used to promote the films (located on Disc 3: The Duchess and The Devil) and one on England's warships on Disc 4 (The Wrong War). If you are a fan of the books and/or the Greg Peck film, then this definitely belongs as a permanent copy of your library. I am waiting for A&E to do the rest and naturally will buy them on DVD from Amazon :-)

Summary: Great entertainment, marvelously done!
Review: This is one of the best new titles to come along in quite a while. The 4 parts of this epic are spectacularly produced, marvelously written, finely acted, and are interesting, entertaining, engrossing and instructional all at once.

The detail of these productions is superb, as is the sense of place and time. Adventure, history, drama, all percolate through these works. The sea battles are astounding, the human dramas compelling. Hornblower is heroic, but believable. He is human, but his humanity is of an extraordinary sort. A compelling hero indeed!

This series is a must!

Summary: "Hornblower" shows how good television CAN be
Review: Having never read C.S. Forrester, I stumbled across the first Hornblower movie (The Duel) on A&E. Wow. I spent the next two hours laughing, cheering or literally on the edge of my seat. The next three installments were every bit as good. The Hornblower series has something for everyone - action, drama, romance, intrigue . . . but the key is the brilliantly drawn characters and their wonderful portrayal by this top-notch cast. The Emmy was well-deserved. To bad Hornblower can't be nominated for an Oscar, too!

Summary: An Experience Enjoyed
Review: Having read the Hornblower novel as a youth I was unsure how the producers would be able to convert them to the visual media. I was suprised! I watched one disk (DVD) per night and cannot wait for rest of the novels to be produced.

Summary: Stunning!
Review: This should be an inspiration to all future movies set on the high seas! The acting was supurb, the costumes brilliant, and the ships and sets took my breath away. In a time where computer animations are stealing the scene, this movie shows just how good the real thing looks. There is a scene of the ship sailing in with all hands in dress uniforms standing at attention on the yards that must be seen. The whole series leads up to that image, and it is worth every penny it cost to build, rig, and crew those ships! I can only hope that with the success of Hornblower that we may soon see Patrick O'Brians Aubrey & Maturin series adapted by the same team!

Summary: Accuracy
Review: These four movies made from C. S. Forester's book, Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, were faithful to Forester's novel. They are accurate in technical details of the French Revolution period in which they take place. The four movies show each character and each side of the conflict between the British and the French in an even handed manner. Many movies make one side out as heros and the other side as idiots or worst. These movies take pain to show both sides according to their best ideals and beliefs. They show patriotism by both the British and French. They are stories from the most important conflict of that historic period and show the best efforts of all participates. The movies show the best traits of heroic men as well as the base traits of scandals. Desperate struggles are vividly depicted with fighting men on each side trying their best to prevail. The best, but imperfect efforts, of men of war are realistically shown. The four movies are faithful to Forester's books, the historic period, and the charateristics of fighting men in desperate conflicts. The fast moving stories are a pure pleasure to watch. They make a superb collection which can be watched over and over with great anticipation. It is hoped that the makers of these Hornblower movies will continue converting the rest of the fine Hornblower books to movies.

Review: Brilliant acting, beautiful costumes, beautiful ships, beautiful people, superb. I am 15 years old and this series is a masterpiece. I enjoyed it more than "Pride and Prejudice". My 9 and 13 year old brothers and parents were also hooked. Marvellous!
