Summary: Surprisingly Great
Review: I'm a 35 y/o dad, who grew up watching I Love Lucy episodes while in N.Y. in the '70's. I remember the Here's Lucy show only because I watched it later on as a teen on cable. I always thought that it just did not live up to Lucy's first show (to be fair few shows do). But I saw this item on Amazon and placed it on my wish list for x-mas, and I will have to say that it was surprisingly good. The episodes that were selected were all incredibly funny and just watching all these stars, some that have unfortunately passed away now, just makes the viewing experience even more nostalgic.
The rest of the studios out there should take a good look at this DVD collection, and learn something from it. For starters there are very few shows where ALL the episodes are classics, so why not just compile the best episodes in one box set, like they have done here. I know there are are bunch of hard core fans that want every single episode of a show, but I for one find that sort of ridiculous. Really do you have to have EVERY episode of Seinfeld or Friends for goodness sake, just give us the good stuff on one set and sell the others to those hard core fans. I believe this box set is what a box set should be, the best episodes, commentary, bloopers, behind the scenes and even whole segments of shows where Lucy guest stars for the same stars that appeared on her show. Now that is getting more bang for your buck, if you ask me.
Oh and finally, the two episodes where you see Lucy with her old side kick Vivian Vance were just perfect. This really has been a great gift.

Summary: Too much emphasis on guest stars
Review: I'm a huge fan of Lucy and, especially, the Here's Lucy series. I thought this package was OK, but would have been much better had they chosen the best episodes period, instead of focussing on the episodes that had the famous guest stars appearing in them. I was also disappointed in the syncing of the visual and audio tracks - they were slightly off. The commentary by Lucie and Desi Jr is very interesting, but you actually have to watch the episode by itself first as it's impossible to hear the lines from the show and listen to the commentary at the same time. Perhaps a separate short commentary (rather than one that accompanies the show) would have been a better format.

Summary: This is how a series DVD set SHOULD be done
Review: Some may quarrel over this issue of releasing a "best of" set, as opposed to a season set. In this case, I think the "best of" format serves the purpose best. While this show, during it's run, had some great moments and some dull ones, the dull ones are few and far between on this set. This is a cavalcade of old stars, from when Hollywood stardom meant class and talent....Richard Burton, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Ann-Margret, and George Burns, just to name a few. (The episode with Lawrence Welk hamming it up is a howl.) Only when the guest stars disappear does this show hit the skids. "Here's Lucy" was best when it played out as a skit, similar to "The Carol Burnett Show".

It's great to see these true stars, and the transfers are wonderfully done by Shout. Not only that, the extras are outstanding as well. Commercials, promos, rehearsal tapes, outtakes...you name it, it's there.

If you are in the least bit interested in truly funny bits, and stars of the golden age of hollywood, this is a must have.
