Rating: Summary: Ambivalent Review: I do not have cable tv and so this viewing of the first season and the hour-long pilot is my only experience of this show that so many people I know say is their favorite and the funniest show of all time. It does not strike me that way. There are certainly some funny moments and I do love Larry David's "doubletakes" and the "deadpan stare" and some of his other facial expressions - really great comedic art - and honestly, I think Larry David might have the greatest laugh, smile and look of stunned surprise of any comedian ever, as well as that doubletake and deadpan stare. There are times when he seems like a post-modern version of the old Woody Allen, without the handwringing, melded with Charlie Chaplin and Pagliacci (the laughing on the outside, crying on the inside clown - and the allusion to the clown in the Seinfeld episode -) and Buster Keaton and, of course, all the magnificent Seinfeld characters and actors whose personae obviously flowed out of Larry David, now we know. Another reviewer here said there is a significant level of discomfort watching this show and I concur with that. First, I really dislike the language that is often way beyond simple vulgarity; sometimes a little is funny, but there is a lot and it's the roughest of the rough. I'm not sure why, except to show that this is "not your mother's Seinfeld" or something. I think Larry David is brilliant, witness Seinfeld and the writing of this show, but I don't like watching a comedy show while bracing myself for an onslaught of pretty "filthy" language and sometimes content. So, it's a mix: the laughter is delicious and the labyrinthine "plots", like Seinfeld's, are fabulous and brilliant, but the foul language and some of the situations can be pretty nasty and distract from the great comedy. IMHO.
Rating: Summary: A great show Review: Wow this show is amazing. Larry is so funny. I recommend
Rating: Summary: if you don't like it, you don't understand it (or anything) Review: there is one negative review of this dvd. the author of that review obviously got lost while watching "curb". it must be frustrating to completely not get the joke. the series is very funny and worth buying. i am eagerly waiting for the next season to be released.
Rating: Summary: Very Funny! Review: I love this series. It's similar to Seinfeld in that it's about "nothing." But the characters are totally different and it's a bit more "on the edge" in terms of subject matter.
Rating: Summary: Gorgeous Review: Larry David is delightful. No two ways about it. If you dug Seinfeld, then buy this. David is like all four Characters of Seinfeld all in one crazy old man. One can see where all the genius of Seinfeld came from, and just why the show lame-ified once David left. This is Seinfeld, squared (with Plenty of swearing in the bargain!).
Rating: Summary: Disappointing, unsophisticated, not funny - PASS Review: So he co-produced Seinfeld. So what. Reading others' reviews I had to go through the pain of watching three episodes but - no escape - this is insultingly stupid. It's just bad. As sophisticated and as funny as a three year old discovering four-letter words. Combined with bad acting. I very rarely write reviews but this made me do it. Just get something else.
Rating: Summary: Not for everyone, but it should be Review: Of course when people think of the word "Seinfeld" they think of either the Emmy award winning Show, or the stand-up comedian. The average Joe doesn't ever add Larry David to that mix. Considering how Larry David is the Co-Creator of "Seinfeld" that in itself is a crime. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is the exact opposite...after watching so much as one episode of this brilliant show, Larry David is the only thing you can think about. In essence, this show is primarily the ongoing saga of "A show about nothing". The twist is that Larry has decided to make himself the lead role, and nobody could even come close to doing it better. Larry represents what all of us feel at certain times in our lives. He is simply a person trying to live his life without problems, yet his mouth and his day to day communications with society prevent him from ever coming close to achieving his goal. Almost every episode begins innocent, and by the end the average viewer feels just as lost and victimized as Larry does. When I say victimized, I simply mean that Larry ain't perfect...but neither is the world he lives in. For example, in the first episode Larry comments to his wife Cheryl(played by Cheryl Hines) that his pants "Bunch up" in a rather peculiar way when he sits down. That simple observation alone sparks a series of downward spirals which eventually leave Larry completely unable to explain what is in fact(more times than not) the truth. There are times when watching this show that you can't help but cringe because you know what will end up being Larry's downfall. But it is the eventual downfall and events that transpire that keep you watching(and laughing). Much like the show "The Office", "Curb your Enthusiasm" has a certain undefinable quality that few people can come close to explaining. The 4th Season of "Curb" has just begun recently on HBO, and It is still one of the most Uncomfortable yet Brilliant Comedy series to exist on television. Should you buy this DVD? Yes...unless you are A.Easily offended B. A Child or C.Have no sense of Humor.
Rating: Summary: It's Just NOT Funny Review: I know that "Seinfeld" was one of the most beloved TV shows, but I never really found it funny. The self-absorbed, neurotic behavior of the main characters seemed to cry out for therapy, not laughter. Larry David's show takes that model and actually makes it WORSE: I don't understand how people find this show "cutting-edge," or "bitingly satirical." It's just a self-absorbed neurotic behaving badly. The only one laughing here is Larry David, as in "all the way to the bank."
Rating: Summary: Funny, but not yet at it's peak Review: The first season of Larry David's "Curb your Enthusiasm" is some of the funniest TV you will ever see. There have already been so many other reviews touting why this show is so great so I'll skip all that and just say that the first season is not the best. In fact I'd say it's least of Curb's four seasons. The best season so far has been the second, but they are all hysterical. If Curb continues this streak for say a few more years it could become the Black Adder or Fawlty Towers of American TV.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant!!!! Review: Larry David has that wit that I love. Just like the film AS GOOD AS IT GETS and the show BECKER. The reality-show feel the show has just makes it that much more enjoyable, it gives you the feeling you're just watching this guy stumble through life. He TRIES to do the right thing, but it always seems to backfire in the end somehow, and ends with a laugh while the ending circus theme chimes right in. Also, the woman who plays his wife ain't to hard on the eyes either!!!! ;-)
