Summary: The Best Bonus-Filled DVD of the Xena Series So far!
Review: Xena exploded onto the scene and into many American homes during her 2nd season, with suprising plot twists, interesting charcters and amazing martial arts. The third season, however, took the Xena series to a whole new level. Both Gabrielle and Xena underwent some serious emotional tramua that led to great character developments and a stronger bond in their friendship.

Without giving too much away, I'll just say that the presence of the Olympians and the bumbling wannabe-warrior Joxer greatly increased in this season, as did the shaky and dangerous relationship btw Xena and Ares. Most people would tell you that the 2nd season of Xena was their favorite, but I'm telling you that the 3rd was mine. These characters went through so many twists and turns and the level of comedy reached such a better standard in this season that there's no reason not to love the 3rd season.

Without putting this off any more, here's the complete run down of each of the nine-disc of the 3rd season of Xena: Anchor Bay Home Entertainment now has the complete rundown:

Disc one contains the episodes 'The Furies' with a audio and video commentary by R.J. Stewart, Robert Tapert and Liz Friedman), the first hilarious comedy of the season with a 'ground-hog-dayish' effect 'Been There, Done That' and 'The Dirty Half Dozen';

Disk two has 'The Deliverer,' 'Gabrielle's Hope' and 'The Debt, Part 1' (with audio and video commentaries by Lucy Lawless and Robert Tapert);

Disk three has the episodes 'The Debt, Part 2,' 'The King of Assassins' (hint-you finally find out who Jace is!)(with audio and video commentary by Ted Raimi);

Disk four contains the hilarious epsiodes that spins Aphrodite and Ares out of balance in 'The Quill Is Mightier,' and it also has the episodes that solidfied the mistrust and hatred that Xena had for Gabrielle, and their eventual but slow return as friends in 'Maternal Instincts' and 'The Bitter Suite' (with audio and video commentary by Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, you betcha!);

Disk five contains the epsiodes of Xena and gabrielle's attempt to reestablish their love for each other, and Xena's attempt to forgive Gabrille, and Gabrielle's own guilt constantly resurfacing as well with the epsiodes 'One Against Army' (with audio and video commentary by Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor), 'Forgiven' and 'King Con';

Disk six includes 'When In Rome', the episode that really explores Caesar (with audio and video commentary by Steve Sears), 'Forget Me Not' (gabrille's last guilt-ridden episode) and then 'Fins, Femmes & Gems';

Disk seven has two very different Autolycus-starred episodes 'Tsunami,' and 'Vanishing Act' one a drama and another a comedy, and the first part of the season finale 'Sacrifice, Part 1'(with audio and video commentary by Hudson Leick);

And disk eight has the 2nd part of the season finale 'Sacrifice, Part 2' (with audio and video commentary by Hudson Leick) as well as bonus interviews with the stars of xena and the makers of Xena such as Lucy Lawless, Rob Tapert, Renee O'Conner, Alex Tydings, and for us loyal and remembering fans, a tribute to Kevin Smith. There's also an indepth look into the making of the season finale.

The 9th disc is a a CD-Rom, you know for the computer. It reportedly has screen savers, the usual xena chronicles, quizzes, biographies and over 100 (maybe even 900) sketches of the xena series storyboards. Wow, I know, this dvd is soo freakin cool! It's busting out with dvd extras! Over nine hours of bonus footage-nine hours! Not to mention that this was the best season ever! Get it now, pre-order it or just go out and personally buy it from video stores (besides Best Buy, their version is slightly different), on February 10th, 2004!

Summary: Xena Season Three in Hand!
Review: Picked-up a copy Feb 6 at a local big name retailer who apparently put the set out early.

Bottom line Xena fans should enjoy this release. You already know the 22 episodes by heart so I'll touch on the sound, picture, packaging and supplements.

Very slick packaging maintains the visual motif of the first two sets. Slipcase, foldout disc holders with still photos of characters behind clear plastic spindles (including Bruce Freakin' Campbell as Autolycus). You should have plenty of real estate available for the maneuver of finding the disc you want, even more room for Bruce's big head (inside joke - saw him speak once). 8 DVD's plus 1 CD-ROM in a separate cardboard sleeve. Also an offer for commemorative Xena coins and coupon for '5,000 dinars' ($5) on xenadvd.com.

The picture for the 22 episodes and supplements is Beautiful. Xena & Co. in detail and color the way you never saw on broadcast TV or VHS. As good if not better than Season Two DVD's. Costume and set detail is fantastic, not to mention wigs, abs and fake weapons.

DD 5.1 Surround is Excellent. Supplements include the sound designer mentioning how famous 'Woosh!' came to be in Herc, and then was implemented throughout the Xena series. Very clear audio leaves you wondering how you ever watched an episode without Digital Surround.

I have to say, even though many of you will have seen these episodes, the picture and sound is like 'watching them again for the first time'.

The main menus are similar to the previous Season. Xena's Chakram is a nice main selection motif. Loud menu music might scare the neighbors, as you'll have to raise the volume for the supplements, then forget to turn it down for the loud but exhilarating main menu theme.

The main supplements are on Disc 8 and mainly focus on the writers, Hudson (Callisto) and the Sacrifice episodes. The interview settings are more interesting than standard talking head set-ups, which is welcome.

Insight is provided into the thought processes and decision-making during Season Two, as it pertained to putting the main character's relationship to the test, and how the two-part Sacrifice finale cliffhanger came to be. They also give their opinions and critiques of how they thought they're own work played out. Overall everyone is satisfied with the efforts and results of Season Two.

They address how their writing decisions may have been perceived at the time. They seem to have cared enough to realize the importance of the fans' opinions but didn't compromise their creative decisions either.

Ted states he was on the Internet reading what fans were saying about Joxer and hoping they didn't hate him. Overall good stuff even if you know all there is to know about the Xenaverse. All the participants seem to genuinely care about the show and their contributions without pretension.

Not a lot of time is spent with Lucy and ReneƩ in this section, so you get to hear from others, which is a good thing, seeing as though these season DVD sets will be released every six months. Once collected, we may get a nice sampling of the important players who contributed to the series as a whole.

The disc touches on each of the main characters with short clips and the actors who portrayed them commenting on themselves and others including Ted (Joxer), a lot of Hudson (Callisto) with straight blond hair looking into yoga and dance, Alexandra (Aphrodite) sans wig musing on her intuitive vs. intellectual approach and extensive Aphrodite research.

There's also a pleasant if unofficial tribute to the late Kevin 'Ares' Smith God of War. Hudson is especially complementary of his physical presence. Nothing but good things are genuinely said by director, producer and cast alike. You can't help but feel they're content with having known a great guy who was fun to work with.

Some of the interviews are slightly redundant but after watching them all, it's well done, informative and heartfelt.

There's an interview about the Sacrifice episodes that speaks more specifically about the season finale, while the other supplements on the disc speak to that and to the season as a whole.

Video commentary involves Hudson on-camera watching the episode on a plasma monitor. She says when to fast-forward to parts she wants to comment on. We watch as she comments, then they fast forward through Joxer's scenes :-) Ted's a good swing dancer she says. Nice little supplement for Hudson fans. Overall in the supplements there's more than one person who comments on the ambiguity of Xena killing Callisto and what each character felt or thought up to and at that moment.

Deleted Scenes? There's numerous alternative work print cuts (time-coded unpolished video) with on-set audio and SFX cues showing takes of extended scenes. Quite a number of scenes in fact. Each follows a clip of the actual TV version from the Sacrifice episodes for comparison. There's a good extension of a campfire scene with Callisto and Xena. A nice extended scene of Dahak's dancers. Some more Joxer cut out. More Callisto blowing things up. Additional dialogue. Overall a nice format worth watching more than once.

Lots of time devoted to these as well as a blooper reel, which combined, offers a glimpse into the on-set filming of Xena. Lucy flubs a line and goes straight into her Kiwi accent like putting on a coat, then back to the Xena accent. One blooper includes too many takes, but the others are nice to see. The cumulative effect is that it feels like being on the set. Very nice!

The rest I'll leave to you to explore, but that's the gist of the new supplements, along with the standard but equally-welcome commentary tracks and trivia and photo galleries. The quality and insight is very good, well thought-out and some effort was put into this set. I'm looking forward to future sets.

Summary: Xena, The Saga Continues!!
Review: Compassion, Spirit, and Determination, are only a few of the emotions that are apparent in Xena Season Three. Like season One and Two, Xena (Lucy Lawless) is still seeking redemption for her dark past, but with the company from a light-hearted friend Gabrielle (Renee O' Conner), and with others like the amiable Joxer, Xena looks to be on her way. Season Three is packed with others such as the muscular and attractive Ares, with the puzzling Calisto and vain Aphrodite to name a few, and all Xena fans know the plots and story lines just keep getting better as Xena travels.
It is episodes like the musical, "The Bitter Suite," that makes Season Three a set you MUST have. The episodes range from dramatic and deep to comedic and light hearted. This DVD set is enjoyable from start to finish and every episode is five stars. Get it now, and you'll see that there is nothing to critique, only room for admiration. BATTLE ON XENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Xena at her best
Review: "Xena" captivated fans of all ages throuthout its six year run, but no other season compares to the magic and the adventure from season 3. Adventure, comedy and drama are mixed together to create some of the finest episodes the show ever had. Amazing comedies such as "Warrior...Priestess ...Tramp" and 'Been there done that" are balanced by heart-breaking dramas such as 'One against an army" and "The Sacrifce", creating an exquisite balance between the seriousness and goofieness that made Xena a must-see TV show.

Xena and Gabrielle's growth as characters is also one of the main themes explored in season 3, including the so called "Rift"; a crucial number of episodes that tested, and then strenghtened the Xena and Gabrielle relationship. The culmination of this "Rift" is one of the all-time classic Xena episodes, "The Bitter Suite", the amazing musical that showcased Lucy Lawless' extraordinary singing voice.

Do you like drama? Some of the best of Xena is in this season.
Do you like comedy? In this season it is so good you'll be laughing so hard your belly will hurt.

All Xena seasons are good, but season 3 is a must have because it was in this season that Xena truly became a pop culture icon.

All seasons are good, but this one's a must have, starting with the incredible "The Furies" and ending with the heart wrenching "The Sacrifice". The season is packed with love, hate, laughter, action, adventure, pain, joy; the characters lived it all, and so will you.

Besides the episodes themselves, which are classic TV, there are a great variety of extras in this: interviews with the people who made the show possible, bloopers,deleted scenes, photo gallery, featurettes, etc, you will be getting a lot for your money!

Whether you're a hardcore fan like me, or a newbie, don't hesitate to get this season. Even if you aren't a fan now after watching this season you will be.

Review: S3's gr8 for other things, too: The Bitter Suite a fav of mine! Kevin singing, a sneaky H:TLJ Spoiler, dear, sweet Joxer getting all manly..!! OK, so, if you're a bloke, that probably won't work on you -That's why you've got Gabby's Golden Locks-!?-3 & 5 are my favourites of X:WP! 3 cos it has the hilarious Christmas story which includes Tobias the talking donkey, & Lucy Lawless' fantastic ability to chamelionise her voice, as the 3 Fates'! It has plenty, oh, plenty, of Kevin and Ted, too! Xena's obsession with fishing is intro'd, and Minya guest stars, once in a while! Minya's Cool!! (Maybe not, exactly, but cool cos she's not!!)... Like 5 til Joxer checks out, so 3 is a gr8 way to nibble at the best of both worlds (OK, OK, wrong universe-But if you're Cult TV MAD, like me-Doh!-You'll get that irreverantly obscure ref.!!) ADORE the chance, in 3's 'King of Assassins' to see TED RAIMI mercilesly take the pee out of the sibling rivalry he so obviously suffered..! Which character is which brother in the Raimi Triage..?? As the youngest, & cos he's so fab as Joxer, I think we know from which vantage point dear Ted quakingly stood - Brave boy (and/or man!!?)!!

Summary: Xena The Mighty Warrior Princess
Review: Hello to all the Xenites out there, A new dvd for a new generation. Season 3 what else can be said about it. First off it is one of the more darkest of all the seasons. The start of the season is most interesting, with the claiming of Ares as Xena father or is he.....well if you want to find out you will have to buy the dvd.Xena and Gabrielle went through a lot this season. One thing was the birth of Hope, the child of Dahak to the inocent Gabrielle, but not as inocent as before because she loses her blood inosence this season. Many new characters make an apperance this season like Lao Ma Xena's mentor.Xena and Gabrielle are compelled through many trials in this season including the death of Xena's son Solan. which brings to the middle of the season in the episode : The Bitter Suite, a musical journey through the pain that Xena feels for the loss of her son. Then brings forth the more funnier parts of the season with the episode The Quill Is Mightier...The season takes you to many distant lands including Rome where Caesar is up to no good. That brings us to the season finale where Hope is back to bring forth Dahak and guess what just happens to be pregnant with a child.The first of six Destroyers, to kill all that is good in the world. Which brings to a tragic end to the season the death of Gabrielle or is it.... So if you love Xena as much as I do go get your season three collection today, and if you haven't gotten the first two seasons start there.
