Summary: B5 transcends pedestrian in season II
Review: From a non-fan perspective; if you were turned off by the first season, don't fully give up yet. Some of the material made me cringe (especially in season I), but the show gets momentum toward the end of season II and ultimately shines in a few areas like better actors and CGI, MUCH better sets and lighting (though picturesque backgrounds are still an obvious eyesore), and the writing is becoming more bearable and even good at times. There is entertainment here for me, it's just not for the demanding. If your hesitant, wait for season III and get the B5 movie "In the Beginning", it's a great stand alone story (fifteen bucks?). The other "movie" on the disk is called "The Gathering" and will instantly give you an idea of how bad this show can get and will be the test of whether you'll enjoy season I (people seem to LOVE it).

Review: I will make it short and sweet. I have seen a lot of great movies and TV series, This bye far is not only the BEST, but also the most REWARDING. A series not to be miss.

Summary: Great show, DVD still lacking.....
Review: Season one was mastered better. The first few season two episodes, while cleaner than the first set, suffer greatly from grain and noise in the image. Several scenes are shot in a well lighted room or area but there is a high level of detail lost in dark areas and the Earthforce uniforms look black and not blue. Performing a direct comparison between a scene in Sinclair's apartment in season one with a scene in Sheridan's apartment in season two show season two as being poorly mastered in this regard.Also the sound is more harsh and comes through more of the center speaker than the first season (much more treble) though the rear surrounds seem to be better used in this set. Still, there are several scenes with poorly mastered dialog (Londo and Vir talking in the Zocalo in "Geometry of Shadows" is noticably poor!) This is on a system with a HD TV and a reasonably high quality sound system that is not changed between swapping DVDs in the player. So the discs are different in quality. I have not yet watched the entire set, but it does not look promising after four episodes... You may want to rent before you buy this one.

Summary: B5 Great, DVD Transfer Bad
Review: I was very eager to get the latest season of Babylon 5 available on DVD. The 16x9 / Widescreen / Anamorphic DVD format is great. The problem is the image quality and transfer- it's not so great. Images are grainy, dark, soft focus, about VHS quality, not up to what is possible and I expect for DVD.

Summary: Great Series...not great quality
Review: First off this is my favorite Sci-Fi series of all time. I saw it for the first time a friends collection. He had old hand copied VHS and a few seasons in laser disc. I seem to remember the laser disc being better quality than the new DVDs. The quality of video on this set is not any better than on the first. The high quality shots are full of small film flecks and blemishes. I can live with that if they are not working from a digital source. What I cannot live with is the scenes that are so bad it is often hard to make out words and faces on the screen. It seems that many of the scenes with CG scenery were not made in widescreen. Either that or the widescreen format was lost. It appears as though they took a 4:3 picture enlarged it and cut off the top and bottom of the picture to fit widescreen televisions. This was horribly evident in the ISN episode where text on the top and bottom of the screen were cut off a bit. Also in these bad scenes, close ups often cut off heads in the middle of the forehead...it is noticably different from other shots. I would rather have them left certain scenes in 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars than this horrid attempt at wide screen. The sound is very good and the menu system is very nicely done. The physical presentation of the set is also nice. Unfortunately this is the only way to get this great series now, and I doubt they will be remastered...so I am torn as to weather or not to get the future seasons. I should note that I have a HD WS television and a Denon progressive scan DVD player using component video outputs. I have watched them on a regular tube with an old pioneer DVD player and the quality issues were much less noticable. Also I have read that some DVD players have a source setting and putting this on a film setting greatly improves the quality. I cannot confirm this though.

Review: After watching season 1 I pre ordered season 2 only to be forced to wait while a replacement was sent. Two disc #4 and no disc #1. Did any one else have this problem?

Summary: DVD add-ons a mixed bunch
Review: JMS's commentary is both humorous (expositions on table sizes follwed by apologies for being such a weenie) and enlightening (he finally settles the reason why Sheridan replaced Sinclair). As always, worth the price of admission. The commentary by Boxleitner, Christian, and Doyle is completely different. In some ways, it is more like a MST3K experience! However, it is not only very funny but very enlightening on what it was like to be on the set and part of the "family." Doyle's comment about breakfast after the makeup sessions, "we were smelling eggs and bacon and [the Drazi actors] were smelling latex and glue" really set out an image.Video and audio quality are quite good. There are no real down sides to this set, just a few weak ones. Any B5 fan should have it.

Summary: A little more real than Star Trek
Review: When the Babylon series was on TV, I never got into it. I bought the first season on DVD and it was great. The second season was even better than the first. Although I love all of the Star Trek series', I find the view of humanity that star trek has a little on the optimistic side. The Babylon universe has a more "down to earth" view of humanity. If you enjoy Sci Fi, this is an awesome series for you.

The series itself is great, the DVD collection leaves a bit to be desired.
The prints that the DVDs were mastered from are grainy, scratched, and about the quality of a VHS tape.
If you want a quailty picture, you'd be better off to record them off of cable on the next go-round. Burn a DVD from that.
